Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that the crisis of confidence has widened among the countries participating in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
During a press conference today after talks with the current head of the organization and Swedish Foreign Minister Anne Lindh, Lavrov said that since our meeting in February, when the minister was here on her first visit as head of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the situation in the organization’s space has not improved and the problems have not diminished.
We are aware that the situation is characterized by the deepening of a crisis between the participating countries and the dominance of confrontational logic over constructive dialogue and cooperation, for which the OSCE was established, noting that the Russian side stressed during the talks that attempts to use this organization to interfere in internal affairs is a very dangerous path and must be stopped .
Lavrov pointed out some shortcomings in the current version of the organization's work, but considered it capable of playing an important role in finding collective responses to common challenges and threats, provided that the efficiency of its institutions and field presence is increased and some imbalances in its geographical and objective activities are corrected alike.
Lavrov stated that his country, along with its allies, has long been promoting a whole set of proposals on reforming the OSCE so as to fully justify its intergovernmental character.
