The nomination period for the general election of the Legislative Council ended last week. A total of 154 people signed up for the election and competed for 90 seats.
Secretary for Administration Li Jiachao, who is also the chairman of the Candidate Qualification Review Committee, held a press conference at 10 o'clock this morning (19th) to announce the results of the qualification review of candidates.
Li Jiachao announced that the qualifications of 153 candidates were confirmed. The only person who was ruled invalid was Liu Zijin, a member of the functional constituency medical and health sector and the Central Committee of the Nursing Association. The reason was that he was employed by a government department and was disqualified based on the regulations of the Legislative Council.
Li Jiachao said that after the election system was improved, the candidates who entered the gate came from different political spectrums, regardless of background, the review standards were the same.
The election will be held on the 19th of next month. The government also gazetted today. The Chief Executive in conjunction with the Executive Council specified that the new term of office will begin on January 1 next year, and the first meeting will be held on the 11th of the same month.
[10:15] Li Jiachao said that the qualification review is based on the candidates’ past behaviors and speeches, as well as the applicable laws at the time, emphasizing that regardless of the candidate’s background, all cases are reviewed by the same standard to ensure the principle of patriot ruling Hong Kong. Avoid the recurrence of past parliamentary chaos, and strive to produce a parliament that can solve problems, be constructive, and find a path to one country, two systems.
[10:10] A reporter from Ming Pao asked whether citizens would not support the new election system if the voter turnout rate drops, and whether the lack of traditional pan-democratic elections is a defect, showing that the parliament is "same color".
Li Jiachao said that some people oppose the new election due to their political stances, and some even initiate boycott elections, which is illegal. He emphasized that the legislative council under the new election system is broadly representative and demonstrates balanced participation to prevent anti-China chaos in Hong Kong and collusion with foreign forces. Enter the parliament to ensure that the future Legislative Council will bring construction to Hong Kong and will not resist one country with two systems and become a destructive parliament.
