If everything goes according to plan, Weilheim's story will be presented in a much more modern and colorful way in the city museum in a few years' time.

The house is to be fundamentally rebuilt.

The winning design for the permanent exhibition was presented yesterday.

Weilheim

- In a room with dark purple walls, objects that were created centuries ago by artists from the “Weilheim School” stand on a pedestal illuminated from above.

Visitors learn more about the exhibits on monitors that they can move along the pedestal.

The “Studio Neue Museen” from Berlin came up with all of this and much more for the city museum.

The design of the office clearly won the competition for the interior design of the house.

The ten-member jury unanimously selected him as the winner from among the five submitted proposals.

That was announced on Thursday at a press presentation.

"You really let it rip"

“You really let it rip,” said museum director Tobias Güthner, referring to what the planners for the “Weilheim School” department had come up with.

Their works would be staged according to the design.

Currently they cannot be viewed at all.

As reported, the permanent exhibition is closed due to structural problems and the lack of a building permit.

But not everything that the “Studio Neue Museen” has incorporated into its design is implemented 1: 1.

Güthner expressly pointed this out.

On the basis of the winning concept, however, work will continue - in constant contact and in consultation with the Berlin office.

According to Güthner, when redesigning the rooms, great importance is attached to the fact that visitors can look outside - into the city that the museum is about.

In 2019, an architectural competition was already running for the renovation of the listed building that once housed the town hall of the city.

The office "Claus and Forster" won.

14 offices then took part in a first round of competition for the interior design of the house, five of which were selected for the second round.

This ended on October 25th with the meeting of the jury, which also included two representatives of the state office for non-state museums in Bavaria.

The competition was organized by the building authority of the city of Weilheim.

Implementation depends on the city's budget

When asked, the building authority representative Katrin Fischer outlined how things should go on in terms of “museum redesign”.

She hopes that the planning will be completed by the end of 2022, said the city administration employee.

If the building permit and the monument law permit have been obtained, the project can be implemented in 2023 and 2024.

Whether this works, however, depends on whether appropriate funds can be made available in the city budget.

Funding should also be requested for the project.

The cultural advisor of the Weilheim city council and chairwoman of the museum development association, Ragnhild Thieler, said yesterday about the project: “I am very happy that it will continue.” The current partial closure of the museum is a great loss for Weilheim.

The drafts

for the interior design of the city museum can be seen until Wednesday, November 24th, on the ground floor of the house.

All offices that took part in the competition submitted proposals for the “Weilheim School” and “Third Reich” departments.

Citizens are involved in the “Museum renovation” project via a survey (online at stadtmuseum-weilheim.de).
