2021-11-19T20:15:55.821Z

The French driver, the reigning world champion, set the third fastest time in the first winter tests on the Jerez circuit.

The Italian Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati), MotoGP vice-world champion, set the best time in the first winter tests ahead of the Japanese Takaaki Nakagami (Honda-LCR) and the French Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha), Thursday and Friday on the Jerez circuit (Spain). A fit man at the end of the season, Bagnaia completed his fastest lap in 1 min 36 sec 872/1000, just 3/10 of the circuit's absolute record (1 min 36 sec 584/1000). Nakagami, whose Honda of 2022 promises to be completely different from that of 2021 (while its competitors are more evolutions), placed at 441/1000 and Quartararo at 452/1000.

The French, 2021 world champion, was not satisfied: "

We have not progressed at all

," he lamented during a virtual press point.

Yamaha knows what needs to be improved.

It is the most important.

(...) I'm not worried, I know they'll work a lot.

""

The old bike was already perfect and we are improving this perfect bike even further.

She is incredible,

”commented Bagnaia.

Marc Marquez absent

Note the absence of Spaniard Marc Marquez (Honda), who suffers from diplopia (double vision) after a fall in training which forced him to miss the last two GPs of the season. He will undergo further medical examinations before Christmas with a view to a decision for 2022, the boss of his team, Alberto Puig announced on Friday. His team-mate and compatriot Pol Espargaro, on the other hand, was back on track after a big crash in the final round of the championship.

These first winter tests were also the occasion for the five "

rookies

" (beginners in MotoGP) - Fabio Di Giannantonio (Ducati-Gresini, 19th), Raul Fernandez (KTM-Tech3, 20th), Remy Gardner (KTM-Tech3, 22nd), Marco Bezzecchi (Ducati-VR46, 26th) and Darryn Binder (Yamaha-RNF, 27th) - to discover their new mounts. The 2022 season is set to start with the Qatar Grand Prix from March 4-6. The “shakedown” reserved for test pilots and “rookies” will take place from January 31 to February 2 at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia. On February 5 and 6, a first test session open to all drivers in Sepang will follow, then a second from February 11 to 13 on the new urban circuit in Mandalika, Indonesia, which is due to host its first GP on March 20.
