It was the lighthouse project Unterföhring in the past few years: the new sports park.

Now the town council has buried the plans.

Unterföhring

- The sports park is history. The municipal council buried the Unterföhring lighthouse project of the past years with an overwhelming majority. The SPD opposes public malice with a “We have always said it” and criticizes the town hall for financial planning without foresight. In the current uncertain times, the community does not see itself in a position to carry out the project, which is capped at 100 million euros. The actually calculated costs are significantly higher. The suggestion of a “slimmed-down variant” did not prevail.

CSU spokesman Manfred Axenbeck did not want to stick shortly before the finish line.

The sports park would have been completed piece by piece, initially without extras such as underground parking and indoor swimming pool.

Instead of a future vision with the character of a jewel that has come true, the community is left with a field that has been rehabilitated for 20 million euros.

Decision "in terms of sustainability"

Mayor Andreas Kemmelmeyer (PWU) does not regard the investment as "wasted money".

The "crater landscape", which has at least been cleaned of pollutants, will be "modeled" for the purpose of later use.

Eight million euros flowed into cleaning up contaminated soil.

12 million went on for planning and fees.

After years of planning and discarding, pulling the rip cord;

Kemmelmeyer saw no alternative: In view of a situation in the construction sector characterized by imponderables and rising prices, the town hall fears that it will not be able to keep the costs, which are already capped.

"That would be a miracle," said Kemmelmeyer, referring to ongoing projects such as the renovation of the elementary school, the fire department equipment house, town hall and apartments.

The latter with "top priority".

Saying goodbye to the "wonderful project" was terribly difficult for everyone.

Kemmelmeyer defended the decision as a decision “in the interests of sustainability”.

Criticism of the “what does the world cost” mentality

The SPD does not like to share the assessment of an inevitable, somehow fateful development. In a statement addressed to the press, parliamentary group leader Philipp Schwarz resisted being taken into "kin custody" by an angry public. For years people have warned that planning is getting out of hand. There is no alternative to ending the project at the moment. But things would not have gotten to that point if reserves had been used more carefully and more carefully in the past.

Praised for simplicity and elegance, the winning design flew around the community's ears at an early stage. The suspicion of primarily providing the FCU with a stadium suitable for the regional league with real and artificial turf pitches, clubhouse, sauna and gastronomy was met with half a dozen stick shooting tracks, indoor swimming pool, room for rugby and volleyball games, for fun sports and adventure playground plus underground parking. The whole thing is rounded off as, according to Kemmelmeyer, a “coherent ensemble” with the school campus opposite. At the beginning of 2018, however, shortly before the first construction freeze, the estimated costs of 60 million euros exploded. The SPD complains of a "what does the world cost" mentality. CSU spokesman Axenbeck, however, sees the appearance of foresight in the reaction of the community. And although he supports the decision, he would have liked to build a mini sports park, at least in slices. "We have been waiting for 30 years," he complained: "We are the only community in the area without a sports park."
