The noose in Brussels is slowly tightening around Poland and Hungary.
The European Commission on Friday sent a letter to the governments of these EU member states asking them for explanations of the rule of law violations that are taking place in their countries.
For Poland, the complaints relate to the independence of the judiciary and the questioning of the primacy of European law.
Concerning Hungary, concerns relate to public procurement, sources of conflicts of interest and corruption.

This approach is part of the new conditionality on the rule of law which, in absolute terms and at the end of a long procedure, can lead to the suspension of European funds to Member States violating the rule of law. .
But these letters are only a preliminary and optional step.
On Friday, a spokesperson for the Commission presented them as "
administrative letters
".
