Austria today (Friday) became the first country in Europe to announce that it will oblige its citizens to get vaccinated against the corona.

This, following the government's announcement that from Monday the state will enter a full closure.

Germany warns that they may be forced to enter a full closure following a sharp rise in morbidity in Corona.

Austria's unusual move has caused alarming statements about the severity of the fourth wave of the virus in Europe, the epicenter of the epidemic.

More and more governments are now looking desperate and losing their patience with vaccine refusers and moving from voluntary to binding measures to advance the vaccination campaign.

Some European countries, including Germany, which was once seen as a "model" for managing the virus, are now facing some of their most severe morbidity levels in the last two years since the epidemic began.

The rise in morbidity, health authorities say, comes in the wake of several factors, including stubborn opposition from citizens to get vaccinated, cold weather that brings people together in enclosed spaces and mitigating restrictions.

With its latest move, Austria is significantly ahead of other European countries that have reached the brink of a disease that once seemed unthinkable.

The announcement drew a threat of violent protest from leaders of vaccine opponents and the country’s far-right party, which likened government decisions to those of a dictatorship.

The idea of a vaccine requirement for adults, was a line that Europe was unwilling to cross.

But as closures became frequent, the decision to vaccinate became more and more plausible.

The vaccine bill in Austria will take effect in February, in the hope that as many people as possible will take the doses.

The Ministry of Health said that the announcement is only the first step in a process that will include more careful enforcement.
