The US Attorney's Office has requested a prison sentence of 48 months (four years) for Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of Mexican drug trafficker Joaquín Guzmán Loera, better known as
El Chapo,
according to Mexican media reported this Thursday.
Coronel, 31, pleaded guilty in June to three counts of helping her husband run his criminal empire: conspiracy to distribute illicit drugs in the US, conspiracy to launder money;
and transactions related to drug trafficking.
While he could face sentences of more than 10 years in prison just for the charges of helping to import cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana, in addition to fines of thousands of dollars, the recommendation of the prosecution is understood in light of the agreement of guilt that reached the Government this year.
