Wanted: living space for employees of the research center

Special drugs are to be developed in the planned research center in Murnau's Kemmelpark.

But where should the 75 to 150 employees live?

There is still no answer to this question.

Murnau

- The physicist Stephen Hawking wrote outstanding papers on cosmology, general relativity and black holes.

In 1963 he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a degenerative disease of the motor nervous system.

Medical professionals suggested that Hawking only had a few years left to live.

But it turned out differently.

The Briton died in 2018.

What does that have to do with Murnau?

Well, a bio-tech company that deals with ALS is involved in the targeted research center in Kemmelpark: Velvio GmbH.

The Regensburg-based company "is developing two novel therapeutic approaches that have not yet been established for the treatment of ALS," says a brochure.

It's about new drugs.

"Despite global efforts, there is currently no effective treatment for ALS."

Nothing to see yet

The research center has been planned for years.

But so far nothing of this has been seen on the area provided for this purpose, which has caused a certain displeasure in some local councils.

The investors want to go through with the project, however.

What exactly will happen in the research center?

Velvio managing director Professor Ulrich Bogdahn holds back with details.

“That is a very complex question that I would not like to give superficial answers to without consultation with everyone involved.” Only this much: “Companies such as Neurovision and Velvio, together with other partners (such as the UKM), want to do clinical, application-oriented research with a focus on regeneration (neuro) -degenerative diseases (including trauma). "

75 to 150 jobs are to be created in Kemmelpark.

This naturally raises the question of where the employees will live.

“That is one of the main questions to be solved in the region,” Bogdahn is clear.

But he emphasizes: “First of all we have to take the first step.” And that is to get the research center on its way.

Bogdahn, who is also one of the shareholders and managing directors of Neurovision Pharma GmbH, thinks it is conceivable that an investor will build apartments once the research center is in place.

Community: Employer has to worry

The market municipality points out that this is a private project. "Every employer who wants to be based in our region is called upon to think about where their employees can live," says town hall spokeswoman Annika Röttinger. "But we as a community cannot assess which needs are needed in which segments."

In the Murnau research center there will be medical and scientific, administrative and assistant staff as well as those from the fields of medical technology, computer science and statistics.

So far no employees are wanted.

“Understandably, that can only be done in due time,” says Bogdahn.

However, the doctor and his colleagues want to take care of the acquisition at an early stage.

"We always have interested parties who want to take part," says the former director of the clinic and polyclinic at the University of Regensburg.
