    RKI boss Lothar Wieler is already warning of the fifth.

  • The federal and state governments have therefore agreed on stricter corona rules.

  • Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder goes one step further.

+++ Update, November 20, 2021, 7.45 a.m.:

Germany is in the middle of the fourth corona wave. But experts are already warning of a fifth wave in the corona pandemic. "If the reduction in contacts and the vaccination do not succeed intensively, we will also get a fifth wave according to the current modeling," Lothar Wieler, President of the Robert Koch Institute, told the dpa news agency.

According to Wieler, a worsening of the corona situation in Germany can only be prevented through the widespread use of corona vaccines *.

"The rest of the winter depends heavily on what happens now," said Wieler.

According to Thomas Mertens, head of the permanent vaccination commission (Stiko), vaccinations can no longer stop the fourth corona wave.

“The vaccinations are very important for how things will look in the next year,” Mertens told the news broadcaster Phönix.

Meanwhile, the number of cases in the Corona crisis * in Germany has risen again.

The RKI reported on Saturday (November 20, 2021) the 13th day as a result of a record seven-day incidence.

Corona-News: Lockdown in Bavaria - other travel destinations are becoming high-risk areas

+++ 6.50 p.m.:

The Corona booster vaccinations should increase significantly and be made more with the vaccine from Moderna * instead of Biontech. The Federal Ministry of Health emphasized on Friday that enough vaccine for such "boosters" would be available by the end of the year. Since the preparation from Biontech has so far made up more than 90 percent of orders, Moderna should be used more and more. This should ensure that sufficient vaccine is available in the short term. In addition, stored Moderna cans expired from the middle of the first quarter of 2022, but this must be avoided.

For Biontech, "maximum order quantities" are to be defined, as stated in a letter from the ministry to the federal states.

For the time being, practices should be able to order a maximum of 30 doses per week, vaccination centers and mobile vaccination teams 1020 doses.

"Orders for Moderna vaccine are not subject to a maximum limit and are fully supplied," says the letter, which is also available to the dpa.

Corona booster vaccination: Moderna and Biontech

In the practices, due to the limitation in Biontech orders from November 23rd, a significantly increased need for advice can be expected, said the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV).

"As a result, most of the patients who were vaccinated with Biontech as part of their basic immunization will now - if they are over 30 years old - receive a booster vaccination with Moderna," said KBV Vice-President Stephan Hofmeister.

According to available study data and according to the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko), both vaccines are equivalent.

! Nevertheless, there will be a great need for explanation, which ties up valuable time that is then lacking for vaccination, ”said Hofmeister.
