Erding - Ironically, during the corona pandemic, the gastronomic offer in Erding's city center increased significantly.

Sweet, vegan, savory and classics are new.

The corona pandemic has hit the catering industry hard.

Nevertheless, a lot has happened in Erding's culinary scene in the past few months.

On Bräuhausgasse alone, four new restaurants opened within a year.

The decision to do so was usually made during lockdown, but we do not regret it, as our visit - before the latest political decisions - shows on site.

The Stark family, who have been running the café of the same name on Mühlgraben for years, decided on a second restaurant in the city center last year - the “Lou”. The decision to succeed Uwes Klösterl was made after the first lockdown. “That was difficult, and of course we hesitated a little and thought about it,” recalls Louis Stark (23).

After opening in October 2020, the restaurant was only open for three weeks before the lockdown came.

The young chef had expected the renewed restrictions, “but more like three to four months.

That was of course depressing for all of us, ”says Stark.

Lou bridged the lockdown weekends with takeaway food and cocktails.

One year after it opened, the family can say: Not only is Café Stark's still popular, but Lou, too.

"It's going great now, and thank God we don't regret the step," says Stark.

As in many other restaurants, he is still looking for new employees.

Thomas Mittermeier's decision to move from the TC Erding clubhouse on the Volksfestplatz to the city center was made shortly before Christmas 2020. The 41-year-old then opened his new store "Zum Mieze" at the beginning of April. Especially the bubble waffles, which are decorated with ice cream, cream, fruit and other ingredients, were well received. So good that Mittermeier rented another room on the corner of the Rätschenbach for his sweet dishes.

However, sales there have declined since the summer holidays.

“We can't say why it broke in either,” says Mittermeier.

He suspects that the causes are the changing corona rules and that the innovation bubble waffles has probably waned a bit.

From December he wants to bundle his sweet and savory dishes again in the front premises on Bräuhausgasse.

Nevertheless, Mittermeier is satisfied.

A trend that has returned is the bubble teas, which have been sold at Baso Tea in Erding, for example, since April.

The business has done well.

"We are very satisfied, everything is OK," says owner Vu Nguyen (29).

Since the end of August, sushi has also been prepared in the bistro, which is now almost more popular than bubble tea, says Nguyen.

Immediately next to it, another Vietnamese snack can be found since the end of July.

In Kim's Bistro there are Asian specialties, salads or soups - but no sushi.

That is why their owners do not consider the neighboring bistro to be a competitor at all.

"On the contrary.

It's a good neighborhood and works very well, ”says Nguyen.

In the middle of the first lockdown, the successor to Café Pano on Schrannenplatz had been settled.

Nino Filippetti (52) made it a Panino in July 2020.

The insecure situation also gave the former Leonardo innkeeper something to think about.

"Of course I had a bit of a problem, but in the end I was very convinced by the 100 percent support of my wife, family and the landlord."

This year's summer was even more successful than 2020 because of the completed construction sites in the center. Filippetti's conclusion is positive: “It was exactly the right decision.

For us, Corona was even an opportunity. "

For almost two weeks now, Erding has had another gastronomic hype.

A branch of the German franchise brand Royal Donuts opened on Münchener Strasse, with shops in cities causing long queues.

The mostly artistically decorated donuts with a wide variety of fillings and ingredients are popular with younger guests on social media.

The Erdinger branch is owned by the former Demirel Demiroglu from Wartenberg and his partner Anastasia Ittner, who describe the district town as an attractive location.

The couple has 120 different donuts on offer, all of which are made on site.

There will also be an additional offer for vegans in Erding.

The Chakula food truck, which has existed in Freising since 2008, is already familiar to many from the Sinnflut Festival.

From the beginning of 2022, Erding will become the second permanent Chakula location.

Owner Alexander Gretz (37) is planning a vegan bistro with delivery service at Haager Strasse 16.

The renovation work in the former premises of Foto Mohr is already underway.

Gretz is not worried about the further development of the pandemic: "We are looking forward to Erding."

Even if the gastronomic offer in the city center has increased since the corona pandemic, there is a good, collegial atmosphere in the industry.

“Competition stimulates business,” says Mittermeier, referring to the positive aspects of having several shops and visitors in Bräuhausgasse.

Filippetti also mentions the importance of having a variety of shops.

“I don't see it as competition, but as a further attraction for the city center.

Better to have a restaurant that draws people in than another cell phone shop. ”MARKUS OSTERMAIER
