Ferrari Daytona SP3, a sport prototype on the road

2021-11-20T17:21:56.680Z

NEW - Designed from the chassis of the LaFerrari supercar, the second thoroughbred of the Icona series resuscitates the spirit of the Le Mans prototypes of the late 1960s. Only 599 units will be produced from the end of 2022.

At Ferrari, almost anything goes, except to revive icons of the past. Collectors would not forgive it. This is why in 2018, the Italian manufacturer created the “Icona” line reserved for models which draw their inspiration from the history of the brand. After the Monza SP1 and SP2, here is the Daytona SP3, the second model in this series. Its name is a tribute to the tripled sport-prototypes 330 P4 and 330 P3 / P4 at the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona. Its sculptural line refers to these famous prototypes from the end of the 1960s considered by many specialists as masterpieces. work of style, but also in the study 250 P5 carried out by the Turinese coachbuilder Pininfarina. The result is a splendid berlinetta with a carbon targa roof entirely dedicated to thrill and driving pleasure. With a length of 4,68m and 2.05m wide, the Daytona SP3 is almost as low (1.14m) as the LaFerrari supercar from which it borrows its carbon monocoque chassis.

The stylistic language is that of the racing prototypes of the late 1960s. The rear recalls the study 250 P5.

Once again, the design center directed by Flavio Manzoni delivers a demonstration of its know-how because the design succeeds in meeting the constraints related to cooling and aerodynamics while preserving a purity of form similar to that of prototypes of the years. 1960. At the cost of complex surfaces passing through pinched sides, a multitude of gills, blades, vanes and daggerboards which channel flows and manage currents to improve heading hold at high speed and stability under braking and in curves, the Daytona dispenses with unsightly aerodynamic appendages.

The doors open in an elytron and once installed on board, you really have the impression of being in a Le Mans prototype. The fixed bucket seats are part of the structure of the car and the driving position can be adjusted thanks to the two-section adjustable steering wheel and the adjustable pedals.

Focusing on sensations, the Daytona SP3 is powered by the atmospheric 6.5-liter V12 entirely revisited from the 812 Competizione. Like the prototypes of the 1960s, this engine is placed in the rear center position. Engine manufacturers still managed to find 10 more horsepower to put the Daytona SP3 at the top of the hierarchy of 12-cylinder mechanical road models. It delivers 840 horsepower at 9,500 rpm. It is associated with the F1 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. This V12 drives this prototype off the road to 100 km / h in 2.85 seconds and 200 km / h in 7.4 seconds.

Even before production began in the second part of 2022, the 599 copies of the Daytona SP3, one hundred more than the Monza SP1 and SP2, have already all been awarded.

The price of 2,000,000 euros (in Italy), 800,000 euros more than the LaFerrari supercar, has not dissuaded the titosis for whom the Daytona SP3 is already a collector.

No more than the limited capacity of the trunk under the front hood.

The SP3 is above all a pleasure car, as only Ferrari can do it.
