The US President Joe Biden underwent a routine health check for the first time in his presidency on Friday - one day before his 79th birthday.

The White House published the results of the investigation, with fairly private information such as the president's allergies, the size of his liver or his body mass index (25.0).

It is a peculiarity in US politics that presidents have to regularly disclose how their health is doing.

This is not a legal requirement, but it is common practice.

An "active, energetic, 78 year old man"

Biden's doctor, Kevin O'Connor, concluded the six-page report by stating that the president was an "active, energetic, 78-year-old man."

Biden is fit to fully fulfill his duties as head of government and commander-in-chief.

The letter lists in detail the results of various tests and routine examinations that Biden endured - including a colonoscopy under general anesthesia.

The president had therefore temporarily handed over authority to his deputy Kamala Harris on Friday.

This was the first time that a woman was at the helm of the state in the USA, if only for around 85 minutes.

With general anesthesia, there is a risk that patients will show signs of confusion when they wake up.

Then one speaks of a delirium.

This condition can last longer in older people.

Joe Biden apparently woke up from the anesthesia without any problems.

Biden exercise at least five times a week

O'Connor highlighted two points in his medical report: First, President Biden recently cleared his throat and coughed more frequently at public appearances.

The doctor attributed this to the President's occasional heartburn.

Examinations of the lungs and the airways did not reveal any abnormalities.

Second, Biden's gait is a little stiffer than in the past, especially in the morning.

This is mainly due to general "wear and tear", but also to injuries from the past and a newly discovered mild nerve ailment in the feet.

Orthopedic insoles are therefore advisable.

The president's lifestyle, on the other hand, contributes to his fitness: the doctor noted that Biden did not smoke, drink alcohol and exercise at least five times a week.

Joe Biden is the oldest man to ever move into the White House as President.

He will be 79 years old this Saturday.
