“We usually go to medical missions every now and then, but at the moment we're much more in demand,” says Wolfgang Reichelt, press spokesman for the Dachau fire brigade. In the past two weeks, the fire brigade was alerted three times about a medical emergency, recalls Reichelt. “Compared to before, that's a noticeable amount.” Since 2020, the Dachau fire brigade has always had six full-time fire fighters available during the day for the entire range of operations. When asked how long one could still afford the additional work and help out, Reichelt replied: “We will always go on medical missions, it just depends on how the pandemic and the number of missions and patients change and how often we are then asked."The fire brigade likes to go to medical missions and help," because we have trained paramedics in the fire brigade team and can therefore also provide medical help ".
But it is not only in Dachau that fire fighters are likely to be called in to support the rescue services from time to time in the future. But he can already say with great certainty that emergency services will soon be supported by the fire brigade in all communities in the district. "The fire brigade should only be deployed when it comes to life-threatening or time-critical situations in which the rescue service cannot be on site immediately due to long journeys or a long search for free intensive care beds," says Reimoser and adds: " And even then, the fire brigade more or less only serves as a temporary help until the ambulance arrives, not as a substitute. "
Mike Zimmermann from the integrated control center in Fürstenfeldbruck says that there are not many cases in which the fire brigade is out for medical emergencies.
