The municipal utilities want to supply the north-east of Weilheim with district heating from there.

The city council spoke of “one of the most important future projects for our city”.

But there were also critical questions.

Weilheim

- It has been known for a long time that the municipal utilities want to set up the first district heating network in Weilheim - as other district municipalities, such as Peißenberg and Penzberg, have been doing for years. It is now clear where the energy will come from: A biomass heating center will be built on a former gardening site at Kranlöchl 2, between the tennis hall and Gut Dietlhofen. On Thursday evening, the city council decided by a large majority to change the zoning plan required and to draw up a development plan - against the votes of Romana Asam, Susann Enders (both FW) and Ullrich Klinkicht (“Weilheim Mithaben”).

In the system, wood from the city forest is primarily burned, explained Stadtwerke boss Peter Müller in the city council meeting.

Regional green waste should also contribute to the base load.

Natural gas and biomethane are used as redundancy and for peak loads, according to a press release from the municipal company.

Heating energy for buildings between Narbonner Ring, Pütrichstrasse and Krumpperstrasse

According to Müller, the heating center will supply the building in the area between Narbonner Ring, Pütrichstrasse and Krumpperstrasse with energy for heating and hot water. "Wohnbau Weilheim" is already on board with its planned new buildings on Seitzstrasse. District heating will be offered to all other potential users in the area of the route - which will also include a branch under the B 2 to Münchener Straße. "If everything goes according to plan, the first houses could get environmentally friendly district heating from us as early as 2023," said the Stadtwerke board in the press release. Incidentally, the lines are made of steel, are encased in insulation and protected by a plastic sleeve.

The property on Kranlöchl, which is now designated as a “special area biomass heating center”, now belongs to the city of Weilheim.

It was chosen because it was already built on and at the same time removed from further development, explained Müller to the city council.

Because it is built like a building block, the system can "grow with the customers in the city": One will start with two modules, a total of four or five would be possible on the area.

Exhaust air should be drawn off through the urban forest

City council member Klaus Gast (CSU) sees the facility as "a good investment in the future of the city of Weilheim". He named the development of the “relatively remote” area as the “biggest problem” - which the Stadtwerke boss saw quite differently: “The development at this point is already more than beneficial,” said Müller, also referring to the existing connections. The paved road from the Narbonner Ring will be "heavily upgraded" for the necessary transports. Klinkicht wanted to know whether this project threatened a “small industrial plant” in the country. Müller assured that the system was "easy to stow" thanks to the hillside property - and referred to areas in the Allgäu, for example, where there are such heating centers "on every town edge". The chimney is located in such a way that the exhaust air in westerly winds, such as that prevailing in Weilheim,"Withdraws over the city forest".

“Are the costs for the municipal utilities covered?” Asked FW representative Asam and warned that any deficits “the city of Weilheim would fall on its feet”.

Müller explained that all costs, including those of road upgrading, would be passed on to the customers: “That is quite normal.” Nevertheless, the district heating price would be “acceptable,” said the Stadtwerke board: “with the current one Development of the gas price even more ”.

For Claus Reindl (BfW), the district heating network, which is largely operated with renewable raw materials, is “one of the most important future projects for our city” - and “an absolute necessity” in view of the climate targets.
