The Sudanese army will reinstate ousted Prime Minister Abdullah Hamduk after an agreement reached between the parties, Pedalallah Burma Nasir, the leader of the Nation Party, told Reuters this morning (Sunday). He said Hamduk would form an independent technocrat government and all political detainees would be released under the agreement between the military and civilian parties. Nasir said he attended a meeting last night where the realtors reached a deal.
A source close to the talks said that the Sovereignty Council, headed by the army, would hold an emergency meeting today before announcing the agreement. However, the main opposition body, the Transformation and Freedom Forces, has announced that it opposes any agreement with the military and that the demonstrations planned today will take place in order.
Hamduk was placed under house arrest during the military coup on October 25, which disrupted the process of transition to a democratic regime that began with the overthrow of dictator Omar al-Bashir in 2019.
Dozens of protesters have since been killed in clashes with security forces, and Western countries have threatened to halt aid to Khartoum without returning to civilian rule.
