The Ministry of Environmental Protection announced this week that the government will establish in Be'er Sheva, with an investment of NIS 15 million, an international center for the development of innovation in the field of desertification and climate change - "DeserTech".

The center is designed to harness the experience and innovation of Israeli minds to develop innovative technologies and solutions to the subject.

The statement came, not coincidentally, during the week that world leaders gathered in Glasgow for the UN climate conference, during which they discussed practical solutions to deal with the worsening climate crisis.

Beyond his quest to establish a state for the Jewish people in Israel, Ben-Gurion was in close contact with the community of scientists and researchers and realized - many years before high-tech became the leading locomotive and our hallmark in the world - that the Israeli scientific community and the political system Global.

Already in the early years of the state, Ben-Gurion understood the strategic advantages that would advance the state and the economy and these are today, more than ever, connected to his vision for the development of the Negev as a place where academic institutions operate alongside innovation institutions and form an important economic-business center.

Many years after this important vision we learn, with this important decision of the government, to wipe out the role of an experimental site for research, entrepreneurship and innovation of climate change and desertification and drought phenomena, which greatly concern international countries and organizations, and require technological solutions. The Negev in particular, and Israel in general, have constituted a space of groundbreaking research in these fields for decades. The global desert challenge on the one hand, and the technological opportunity in Israel combined with the physical resources of the Negev on the other, necessitate the cultivation of the DeserTech community, established about two years ago, for these needs. With the unique desert conditions. There is no doubt that this community is an essential component in driving the economic processes in the region and that it will be one of the economic growth engines in the Negev. this,In addition to the huge global potential for exporting solutions in the field to the whole world and indeed collaborations have already been launched with countries like the Emirates, England and the Netherlands.

I also anticipate that this community will have a far-reaching impact on the connection between developers of innovative technologies, which meet the challenges of desert life, and the development of the Negev economy, both in increasing the number of jobs and establishing the Negev as a global center for innovation.

In Glasgow, world leaders have realized that this is the last chance to change the direction the world is heading: a warmer and more dangerous future that will affect us all.

As someone who is deeply involved in the regional economic development of the Negev, I call on decision makers to continue to make strategic decisions in favor of the development of the Negev and the technological ecosystem in place so that they affect the entire world, now, more than ever.
