The lockdown in Austria is supposed to last three weeks, and for the fourth time the government is trying to shut down the country in this way and get the pandemic under control.

The health authorities registered around 14,000 new corona infections on Sunday within 24 hours, and according to official information, the seven-day incidence climbed to 1,085 infected people per 100,000 inhabitants.

The situation is also worsening in the intensive care units, currently (as of November 21, 2021) 528 corona patients are being cared for there.

That is not far from the maximum value of the third wave of 611 patients.

Corona in Austria: curfews, closed shops and dormant cultural activities

The hard lockdown is now set to break the fourth wave in Austria. From Monday, November 22nd, people will only be allowed to leave their homes for a valid reason. Schools remain open while cultural activities are inactive. Parents can therefore decide for themselves whether they want to send their children to school or look after them at home. But there are also some restrictions for tourists. Hotels will close, and ski lifts and museums will also be affected by the lockdown.

The lockdown is expected to end for everyone on December 13th.

"The population needs a clear perspective, an open end must not be," said Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg of the

Kronen Zeitung

.

For those who have not been vaccinated, the exit restrictions should continue indefinitely.

However, not all Austrians are enthusiastic about the measures that have been decided.

Around 35,000 people took to the streets on Saturday.
