Ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Centers for Sexual Assault Victims Reveal 2020 Data • 80% of sexual offenses and sexual harassment cases closed without indictment

The road to eradicating the phenomenon of violence is still long.

About 50,000 applications were received at the assistance centers for victims of sexual assault in 2020. Of these, 13,994 new applications - an increase of 9% compared to 2019.

This emerges from the annual report of the Association of Assistance Centers for Victims and Victims of Sexual Assault, which includes data from the assistance centers and the authorities' data for 2020.

The report will be submitted to the Knesset in a special discussion by the Committee for the Advancement of Women and Gender Equality. This coming Thursday will mark the International Day for the Prevention of Violence against Women.

57% of injuries to minors

The data show that 89% of all referrals reported injuries to women, and 11% dealt with injuries to men.

57% of referrals dealt with harm to minors and minors (under the age of 18).

For the first time, more than 50% of referrals dealt with injuries that occurred at home.

The data also show that in the vast majority of cases the offender is a person close to or known to the victims, so that 89% of the assaults were committed by a person known to them.

32% of applicants were harmed by family members, and another 13% were harmed by spouses (past or present).

In addition, 25% of the victims are friends, neighbors or acquaintances of the victims.

Only 11% of the perpetrators were not known to the victims: in 8% of the cases the perpetrator is a stranger, and in 3% of the cases he provides services.

The report shows that the police have seen an increase in the number of "video law" cases, but on the other hand a decrease in the number of complaints about sexual offenses against minors.

Data collected from the prosecution showed that no less than 80% of sexual offense and sexual harassment cases were closed without an indictment.

It also shows that seven of the referrals to the aid centers dealt with an injury committed through a rape drug.

This, in relation to only one conviction that year.
