French cities witnessed demonstrations that gathered thousands of people with a call launched by about sixty associations, unions and parties to defend women's rights.
The France 24 channel quoted the organizers as saying that these demonstrations come after two years of insufficient measures against domestic violence, expressing the hope that they will be heard five months before the presidential elections.
The demonstrators demanded that "impunity be ended for crimes of domestic violence and violence against women."
"Violence is not destiny and it can be stopped," said journalist Marilye Broel of the We Are All Participating Coalition, noting that she expects candidates for the presidential elections in April 2022 to make strong commitments in the field of violence prevention.
According to the "We Are All" coalition, about 220,000 women are subjected to violence and 94,000 women are raped every year in France, while since January 1, last year, 101 women have been killed by their husbands, according to official statistics.
Yesterday, the French police used tear gas and batons to quell large-scale protests in the capital, Paris, on the occasion of the third anniversary of the founding of the yellow vest movement, which led to the injury of two people.
