Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok, sidelined after the military coup in Sudan, must return to his post under an agreement reached with the country's strongman, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane.

On Sunday, one of the mediators, leader of the big Umma party, told AFP that a "

political agreement has been reached between General Burhane, Abdallah Hamdok, political forces and civil society organizations for a return from Hamdok to his post and the release of political detainees

”.

Including journalists, academics and politicians engaged in mediation to emerge from the crisis, the Sudanese group of mediators issued a statement detailing the main points of the agreement.

In addition to the reinstatement of Hamdok in his functions and the release of the detainees, this includes the return to the political, legal and constitutional consensus which managed the transition period launched after the fall in 2019 of the regime of General Omar al-Bashir in 2019, dismissed by the army under pressure from the streets.

"

The agreement will be officially announced later today, after the signing of the terms of the agreement and the accompanying political declaration

," the statement said.

On October 25, Army chief General Burhane reshuffled the cards for a shaky transition in Sudan. He arrested almost all civilians in power, put an end to the sacred union formed by civilians and soldiers and declared a state of emergency. He had detained and then placed under house arrest in Khartoum Hamdok, who headed the transitional government.

Since the coup, protests against the army and calling for the return of civilian power have taken place mainly in Khartoum.

They have often been suppressed by the security forces, killing at least 40 civilians, mostly demonstrators, and injuring hundreds, according to a pro-democracy doctors' union.

On Saturday, hundreds of demonstrators marched in Khartoum-Nord, a suburb of the capital, erected barricades in the streets and set tires on fire.

No to military power,

” they chanted.
