Another development in the murders and disappearances in Jerusalem 30 years ago: The mayor of one of the cities in the country was detained this morning (Sunday) for questioning on suspicion of involvement in the disappearances of the boy Nissim Sheetrit in 1986 and the murder of Avi Edri in 1990.
In recent hours, the suspect has been questioned at the IDF offices in Jerusalem, and tomorrow the police are expected to request an extension of his detention.
Earlier today, the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court extended the detention of Eliezer Berland, head of the Shuvu Banim community, by seven days until next Sunday.
Berland, who is already serving a prison sentence for extortion and fraud, has been detained as a suspect in these cases since the beginning of November after linking himself in an investigation to the suspicions attributed to him and giving a detailed version.
According to police reports, evidence was gathered against him testifying to his involvement and responsibility for the two incidents, and in one of the hearings to extend his detention, her representatives claimed that Berland "gave the order to murder."
Berland's arrest was accompanied by a series of arrests by members of the community he led, past and present, on suspicion of involvement in the two murders.
