Weyarn - When thunderclouds approach in summer, you can often hear the engine noise of propeller planes.
It is the hail pilots from the Rosenheim district who rise to “inoculate” the thunderclouds.
Weyarn is now a member of the sponsoring association - and contributes an annual amount of 200 euros.
This was decided by the municipal council in its most recent meeting.
The suggestion to join the "Association for Research into the Effectiveness of Hail Control in the Rosenheim Area" came from the Mayor of Miesbach, explained Mayor Leonhard Wöhr (CSU).
He also immediately stated that there was neither scientific evidence nor counter-evidence for the hail defense method.
That had already been discussed in the finance committee, which had previously dealt with the topic.
Philipp Eikerling (Greens) found that, in view of the poor scientific results, there was no reason for municipalities to join the association.
Angelika viellechner (FW), on the other hand, pleaded for membership.
“There are many who are happy when the hailstorm flies,” she said.
Wöhr informed that the finance committee had recommended membership with a narrow majority.
The local council followed this recommendation with eleven to three votes.
The "Hagel-Verein" maintains small planes which, if there is a risk of hail, take off from Vogtareuth and burn silver iodide below the clouds.
The rising smoke particles serve as ice nuclei and should minimize the size of the hailstones according to the principle "the more germs, the smaller the ice grains".
The area of operation of the hail pilots covers 4800 square kilometers in the districts of Rosenheim, Miesbach and Traunstein as well as in 18 communities in the districts of Kufstein and Kitzbühel.
The association has around 8,000 members.
