How has the business tax developed in Bad Tölz?

Chamberlain Hermann Forster answered this question.

In fact, the city is taking in 1.5 million euros more this year than in 2019 - although fewer companies have to pay.

Bad Tölz - There were absolutely amazing findings on Tuesday at the meeting of the Tölz Main and Finance Committee.

Treasurer Hermann Forster discussed the development of trade tax revenue.

There were comparative values from 2019, i.e. from the pre-Corona period.

In fact, the city will earn around eight million euros this year, 1.5 million euros more than two years ago - even though the number of businesses paying trade tax has decreased significantly.

Quite a number of companies pay no business tax at all

For the introduction - especially for the new city council members - Forster gave some basic explanations.

“In fact, not that many people pay business tax,” regretted the treasurer.

One of the prerequisites is that a company makes a certain profit.

In addition, a number of companies are inherently exempt from this tax.

These include, for example, hospitals, old people's and nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities and sanatoriums.

“A large group of payers can be dropped.” Self-employed workers who are assigned to the so-called liberal professions are also not subject to tax.

These include doctors, lawyers, engineers and journalists.

"Rentals and leases are also not subject to trade tax," says Forster.

Of 2058 businesses in Bad Tölz, only 495 are subject to trade tax

There are a total of 2058 registered businesses in Bad Tölz.

"495 of them pay business taxes," said the treasurer.

Two years ago it was 554. The fact that the tax revenue this year is well above that of 2019 is “astonishing”, but it is in line with the national trend.

“In fact, there are major upheavals.

Some municipalities have very little, with others the volume is exploding, ”said Forster.

It is often dependent on the local industries.

Ten companies contribute 45 percent of the business tax revenue

There are only a few really large business taxpayers in Tölz. Just three companies pay more than 250,000 euros per year - but one more than in 2019. Seven companies pay between 100,000 and 250,000 euros. That is two more than in the previous year. Taken together, these ten companies contribute almost 45 percent of the total tax revenue. “But it's good that there are ten companies and not just one,” said Forster. There have been only a few shifts in the areas between 10,000 and 100,000 euros. “The medium-sized structure, which is spread across many shoulders, has further consolidated,” said the treasurer. That forms a stable and fairly constant basis for the city. In fact, there are quite a number of companieswho have previously paid less than 10,000 euros a year and have now dropped out of tax liability because their profits are below the tax limit. The pandemic probably led to this, said Forster.

Banks, real estate and insurance: eleven more companies will have to pay trade tax this year

Forster also briefly discussed the industries that pay trade taxes.

In the banking, real estate and insurance sector, there are eleven more companies this year than in 2019 that have to pay taxes.

The number rose by 13 in the craft / construction sector and by four in the IT sector.

In contrast, there were declines in restaurants / hotels and industry / production (-6 each).

Mayor Ingo Mehner (CSU) found the figures “very interesting”.

Peter von der Wippel (FWG) would have liked to know how "the tax volume is distributed across the individual industries so that one can see which are the most important for Bad Tölz".

However, the chamberlain could not comply with the request.

With a view to tax secrecy, he could not go into too much detail.
