Health ministers demand: Spahn should end the quota for Biontech "as soon as possible"

The health ministers of the federal states put Jens Spahn under pressure. He should release the Biontech vaccine as soon as possible - and get more doses from the EU. Meanwhile, good news comes from Mainz.

The Conference of Health Ministers calls on Health Minister Jens Spahn to end the limit on the quantities supplied for the Biontech vaccine.

The quota for the vaccine should be lifted "as soon as possible", according to the resolutions of the conference, which are available to SPIEGEL.

The Ministry of Health is also asked to continue to allow vaccinations with Biontech in full.

The stocks should be delivered "as quickly as possible".

In view of the increasing number of corona infections, all vaccinated adults in Germany should receive a booster vaccination if possible.

Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn (CDU) would like to increasingly use Moderna for this.

Initially, Spahn had justified this with the fact that the doses of this vaccine might otherwise expire in the first quarter.

Spahn later made it clear that the Biontech reserves were simply almost used up.

Don't hold anything back.

For the time being, practices should be able to order a maximum of 30 doses of Biontech per week, vaccination centers and mobile vaccination teams 1020 doses.

There should be no upper limits for orders from Moderna.

By the end of the year there should be a total of around 24 million doses from Biontech and 26 million from Moderna - enough vaccine for everyone, according to Spahn.

Biontech increases delivery volume

The limitation of Biontech orders triggered massive criticism.

Federal states and doctors' representatives sharply criticize the cap on the amount of Biontech.

There are concerns that this could slow the pace of booster vaccinations - among other things, many people who want to be vaccinated have already received appointments for a vaccination with the Biontech active ingredient.

Jens Spahn now wants to help Biontech himself.

The Mainz-based company can apparently deliver three million vaccine doses instead of two in the coming week.

Jens Spahn said that to his country colleagues at GMK, as can be seen from the resolutions.

The "Rheinische Post" had already reported on it beforehand.

Spahn had announced that the government was trying to increase the quantities.

Biontech then announced that they were checking the capacity.

The GMK urges Spahn in its resolutions to acquire further Biontech cans through the EU.

Moderna the "Rolls-Royce" of vaccines

Spahn had already tried on Monday morning to dampen the anger about his strategy.

Moderna is a "good, safe and very effective vaccine," he said at a press conference.

The vaccine from Biontech is the Mercedes and that from Moderna is the Rolls-Royce.

The health ministers of the federal states also emphasized this in their resolutions.

The Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI) criticized the debate about the corona vaccines from Moderna and Biontech as "inadequate", their efficiency is more than 90 percent, said institute president Klaus Cichutek.

"We are in the land of plenty," said Cichutek and emphasized that in Germany, unlike in many other countries, there was enough very good vaccine available.

Studies have also shown that the vaccine responses are very low in both.

This was also confirmed by Leif Erik Sander, head of the research group for infection immunology and vaccine research at the Charité.

Cross-vaccination with both substances is safe and well tolerated, he said.
