Herzog to British MPs: "Urges you to be tough on Iran" | Israel today

Less than a week before the start of the nuclear talks in Vienna, the Iranian issue was put on the table during President Herzog's visit to Britain • In a meeting with Prince Charles, the two discussed regional issues and related threats, as well as the climate crisis • Herzog will meet with Prime Minister Johnson tomorrow


President Herzog's second day in Britain began with a closed-door meeting with Prince Charles at his private home in the House of Hygrove in Gloucestershire.

The conversation was closed, but Herzog's office said that the two discussed the urgent challenges related to the climate crisis and the great importance that Israel attaches to its relations with the United Kingdom.

Finally, they mentioned that "the president and Prince Charles also discussed regional issues and the threats associated with them," without specifying which issues - but most likely referring to Iran, less than a week before the start of nuclear talks in Vienna.

At noon, Herzog was applauded by dozens of MPs in the local House of Representatives and thanked them for recognizing Hamas as a terrorist organization, while condemning the heinous attack in the Old City.

At the same time, the president referred to the state of the coalition in Israel and described it as "an amazing political event."

The Iranian nuclear program appears to be the highlight of the visit.

So far, there has not been a single meeting that has not touched in one way or another on the aspirations of the Islamic Republic.

Herzog told lawmakers: "Negotiations with Iran are about to resume in Vienna. I urge all parties to be as tough as possible with Iran."

As mentioned, in a meeting with Prince Charles, the President thanked him for his important work in promoting education in memory of the Holocaust, as well as for his participation in the Fifth World Holocaust Forum in Jerusalem, in January 2020. From his family background, as he is the son of a major in the British Army, who participated in the landing in Normandy and was one of the liberators of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.

He also noted that he is a descendant of rabbis who have served in congregations all over the UK.

As for the climate crisis, Herzog noted that Israel has committed to reaching zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050 and that it has a lot to contribute to global efforts by promoting innovative green technologies.

During the evening, Herzog and his wife will participate in a special honorary event of the Peres Bereishit Foundation for the family of the late Rabbi Lord Yonatan Zacks, on the anniversary of his death, with the participation of Jewish community leaders and past and present government officials.
