Pull a work of art out of the cigarette machine?

This is possible at two stations in Peiting.

Above all, regional artists should benefit.

Peiting

- In order to buy real art, you don't necessarily have to go to a gallery - or dig deep into your pocket.

At least that is the concept of an art vending machine that should enable direct and low-threshold exchange between artist and buyer.

Peiting now also has two converted cigarette machines, from which everyone can pull out a one-of-a-kind, pocket-sized item.

Cost factor: four euros.

The first Peitinger art vending machine was recently hung in Bahnhofstrasse, on the facade of Sylvia Hirschvogel's pharmacy.

“When I was thinking about where a vending machine could go, I quickly came to this place,” says artist Peter Mayr, who has taken on the design of the old cigarette vending machine.

Sylvia Hirschvogel has supported him in projects for a long time.

“She is a real patron of art,” Mayr introduces the pharmacist.

Hirschvogel had nothing against making their house wall available as an art transshipment point.

That is why there are now art vending machines in Peiting

An art vending machine is also to be installed in Lorystrasse, directly at Peter Mayr's studio.

“It's not hanging yet because it has a technical defect,” says Hartwin Neumann, who was the first to get the art vending machines rolling in Peiting.

It is not the first time that the native of Hesse has promoted such an action: a few years ago he initiated an art vending machine in Kassel, he says.

When Neumann moved to live with his son in Peiting three years ago, he finally wanted to promote the development of art and culture here too.

The art vending machines would be ideally suited for this purpose - “especially in times of Corona,” says Neumann.

After all, buying art from a vending machine is always contactless and does not depend on whether a gallery is open or not.

Another aspect that convinced Neumann and Mayr to bring the apparatus to Peiting: Regional artists can easily market themselves in this way and receive due recognition for their work.

“It's like a better business card,” Mayr sums it up.

This is how the art vending machines work

The two used devices come directly from the North German company "Kunstautomat", which started selling art in cigarette packets 20 years ago and which is also responsible for the Peitinger campaign. Mayr received the devices in their raw state. "I first had to grind and polish the machines," says the artist, describing the machining process. Then he was able to design them: with colorful children's pictures, to which more should be added. "The concept can be expanded continuously."

And what has to happen before you can pull a unique item out of the machine?

Hartwin Neumann explains it like this: The artists send their works of art - whether drawings, paintings or small objects - with a short vita directly to the “Kunstautomat” company.

The minimum number of submitted works of art, which may not exceed the size of a cigarette packet, is 50 pieces.

The artists receive one euro for each unique piece - so it's less about profit than about promoting art.

As soon as the works have reached the company, they are packed and taken to the machines.

“Sales are spread across northern and southern Germany,” explains Neumann.

This is how the works of art actually arrive in the region where they were created.
