Opinion | The main thing is missing from the Meron disaster report: Zero involvement in the factors responsible for the failure | Israel Today

2021-11-22T21:22:20.829Z

Israel Diskind, the brother of the late Simcha Bunim (23) who perished in the disaster, in an article for "Israel Today": No conclusion of the inquiry committee can be a consolation for us families • However, there is great hope that from now on things will look different

I read the interim conclusions with mixed feelings.

On the one hand, it is a consolation that the death of my little brother and the other 44 killed will not be in vain - those responsible for the failures will pay the price, and the place will be arranged from now on for the benefit of the large crowd that visits Zion every year.

Disappointment with leaders and decision-makers who, without 45 dead, fathers, boys and children, who did not intend to lift a finger for the sake of settling the mountain, innocent civilians who died on the altar of Israeli hypocrisy, like this, because close by.

And the truth is that in order to understand the magnitude of the disappointment, it is enough to go over the 67 sections in the report, sections that do not "invent the wheel" but decisions that are the minimum required to conduct a national event of this magnitude, whether it is increasing mountain area, crowd regulation, improving access and safety infrastructure and more. Many important decisions that could have been implemented even without waiting for the greatest civil disaster since the establishment and a state, if only we were a reformed state.

The report deals with the conduct of the revelry in all its aspects, and if implemented will be in the ability of the decision makers to ensure the preservation of human life during the following Lag B'Omer events.

But the main thing is still missing from the book - zero preoccupation with the issue of budgeting and upgrading the site, and above all zero preoccupation with the factors responsible for the failures that led to the disaster, factors that continue to be used in their role even these days.

No conclusion of the commission of inquiry can be a consolation to us families, nothing can comfort dozens of orphans and widows who at one moment had their world destroyed.

But it does have a fortuitous consolation and an understanding that the demand for the establishment of a state commission of inquiry was a correct and just demand, a commission that proves itself to be such that all its eyes are not revenge but consolation.

And in fact, along with the blessing of thanks to the commission of inquiry into the sacrament that led to the important report, she has great hope, a hope that from now on things will look different, that the escape from responsibility will cease, all invaders will be expelled from the compound, and Mount Meron. The backstory that an honest man will do - will become a place that is run in an orderly and safe manner
