Germany is in the middle of the fourth corona wave.

Hardly a day goes by without a new high in new infections.

Something similar can also be observed in Austria.

Now the neighboring country is planning a general vaccination requirement from February onwards in the fight against the pandemic.

A measure that is also being debated louder and louder in Germany.

A current SPIEGEL survey shows that a large majority of people would support compulsory vaccination in this country.

According to the survey by the opinion institute Civey, more than 70 percent are in favor of making corona vaccinations mandatory.

Around a quarter, however, reject a measure like the one in Austria.

It is also noticeable that there are apparently very few who are undecided on this topic.

When asked whether Germany should introduce a similar general compulsory vaccination against Covid-19, only 4 percent replied that they were undecided.

The proportion of those who answered the question with “more or less no” (4 percent) or “more or less yes” (11) is also relatively low.

The 7500 participants in the representative survey were interviewed between November 19 and 22.

During this time, around 70 percent of people in Germany were fully vaccinated against Corona.

The vaccination rate is thus below expectations.

In order to get the pandemic under control, experts consider a vaccination quota of 85 percent for those over 18 years of age to be necessary.

Majority of AfD supporters against compulsory vaccination

In view of the dramatic Corona situation in the country, many Germans seem to see compulsory vaccination as a suitable means.

However, there are big differences between the supporters of the individual parties.

The measure is most popular with potential voters from the Greens, the SPD and the Union.

In all three groups, at least 85 percent would support the introduction of mandatory vaccination.

In the supporters of the left it was 72 percent.

The measure is less popular among the FDP clientele.

According to the survey, 59 percent are in favor of compulsory vaccination.

Only among AfD supporters is a mandatory vaccination predominantly rejected.

There 63 percent speak out against it.

Differences are also clear when the respondents are broken down into East and West.

While in West Germany 74 percent are in favor of compulsory vaccination, in East Germany it is ten percentage points less.

If one looks at the individual age groups, greater differences become apparent.

Basically, the popularity of a general compulsory vaccination increases with age.

Of the 18 to 29 year olds, only about one in two supports the measure.

Of the Germans aged 65 and over, on the other hand, 87 percent are in favor of the general compulsory vaccination.

While the majority of Germans would like to have vaccinations compulsory, politicians are currently still appealing to those who have not been vaccinated to get vaccinated.

The President of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Lothar Wieler, has also called for vaccinations again in view of the dramatic corona situation.

In the debate about compulsory vaccination, he expressed himself cautiously, but referred to considerations to think about it "as a last resort."
