At the start of a week with nationwide warning strikes, employees at the university clinic in Essen stopped work on Monday.

Before the third round of negotiations in the public sector next weekend, the pressure on employers is to be increased.

Essen - Because of the standstill in the collective bargaining dispute in the public service of the federal states, employees of the University Hospital in Essen stopped working again on Monday.

The unions are increasing the pressure on employers this Thursday at the start of a big week of warning strikes with rallies and a large demonstration in front of the Düsseldorf state parliament.

The decisive third round of negotiations with the employers of the collective bargaining association of German states (TdL) is scheduled for the coming weekend (November 27/28) in Potsdam.

On Thursday (November 25th) in North Rhine-Westphalia employees of the large university clinics, universities, the judiciary, the prison Fröndenberg / Ruhr and parts of the state administration will go on a warning strike.

At the demonstration with a rally in front of the NRW state parliament (around 1 p.m.), Verdi federal chairman Frank Werneke and the head of the Beamtenbund (dbb) Ulrich Silberbach are expected as speakers. The peak of the strike week will take place with a reduced number of participants due to the corona protective measures, the service union Verdi announced on Monday.

"The strikers have made it clear in the last few weeks that the employers' blockade attitude has nothing to do with the reality of their lives," criticized Verdi country manager Gabriele Schmidt. “They find it outrageous that, despite extraordinary achievements in the pandemic, no form of appreciation is discernible.” It borders on “myopia” how employers ignored the services in the health care system. Schmidt: "There is a lack of awareness of a lack of staff, high workloads and continuous performance at the limit."

For the duration of the strike measures at the university hospitals in Aachen, Bonn, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Essen and Münster, “emergency service agreements to protect patients” have been agreed.

Nevertheless, the Essen University Clinic expects restrictions on the four strike days of the week (except Wednesday).

Since the intensive care units are particularly affected, the surgical program must be reduced significantly.

There will also be major restrictions and delays in outpatient appointments and treatments.

"The perception of the supply of external emergencies is guaranteed to a certain extent," said a clinic spokesman for the dpa.
