2021-11-22T20:16:20.643Z

By rewarding the project of a school complex in Neuvecelle, on the shores of Lake Geneva, the jury chaired by Christian de Portzamparc wanted to highlight the efficient and the subtle at the service of the community.

Here is the community of architects gathered again for this 39th presentation of the Silver Square, a prize which seeks more and more young talents, to reward the architect as well as his client who worked for the best achievement. of the year in France.

After a 2020 edition only online - pandemic obliges!

-, the tenors of the profession but also many figures less known to the general public gathered for the announcement of the results, at station F (one of the most important Start-up campuses), in the heart of the hall Freyssinet.

A particularly well chosen place (13th arrondissement of Paris) to present this prize which wants to embody an inventive discipline, aware of the needs of communities and the challenges of ecological transition, always with the desire to cleverly integrate architecture into its environment. It is moreover in this sense that the Silver Square was awarded to a project which at first glance does not look like much but combines efficiency with creativity: the school and extracurricular group in Neuvecelle, in Haute -Savoy ,. It includes nursery school (6 classes) and elementary (9 classes), restaurant, library, gymnasium, parking and outdoor spaces. This was carried out by Atelier PNG Architecture (Julien Boidot and Emilien Robin) with the contracting authority of the municipality forming part of thearrondissement of Thonon-les-Bains and the canton of Évian-les-Bains.

At the end of long debates, the jury chaired by Christian de Portzamparc (77 years old and around thirty medals including the Grand National Prize for Architecture in 1992, the Pritzker in 1994, the Silver Square in 1988 and 1995 , the Praemium imperiale in 2018) estimated that “

this intelligent program in front of Lake Geneva fits subtly and appropriately into the urban landscape. He breaks up the program into several buildings to merge with the small housing units around, while forming a central element in the village

”. And to add: “

the whole is intelligent, modest, joyful and shared. These are the values of urban planning today to know how to succeed in common places

”.

The program for the site was dense, we saw great diversity, potentially a family of buildings. Their interweaving in the slope was thought so that the relations between each equipment can be woven with the neighborhood,

had explained the duo of architects, to defend its project

. It was also the opportunity to open the plot to the city. We sought a peaceful dialogue with the past, through effects of analogy and contrast, a work of complement and its permanence. The walls define the spaces, the buildings the limits between protected and public spaces. At the crossroads of educational places and public spaces, the surroundings are arranged to develop an educational approach, on the slope, the runoff of rainwater like a spectacle

", he added. With its beautiful light and blond wood, the whole seems to be surrounded by beautiful poetry.

For the “Places of activity” area, the award was given to the signaling station in Nantes by the agency of the vintage Titan and the SNCF network in project management. “

It is a simple building and yet very controlled compared to the large territory. A very qualitative building, like a perfect design object, very ambitious in its choices

”, estimated the jury. For the “public spaces”, the mixed program of garden, esplanade and parking at the Friche de la belle de Mai in Marseille wins. It is signed by Kristell Filotico Architect and Roberta workshop for the landscaper. What pleased about this project, which is also very intelligent but not so easy to decipher, is the reconversion of spaces on a single site into several uses, all accessible to the public. This is the case with the car park becoming a place of play.

Consolation prize for the Bourse du Commerce

The “Habitat” went to a rather elegant set of 14 rental housing units (Mars Architects, Gecina project management) in the heart of a block in the 12th arrondissement of Paris.

The “first work” comes back to an original project for an artist's studio and housing in Sergy made in participation.

Made with only three materials, brick, concrete and wood for the roof, it is the result of a great co-production adventure between artists and architects, users and creators.

A special mention for the “First work” was awarded to an urban space of distribution and trade in the 19th, in Paris, by Syvill architecte and Sogaris.

We could expect, in the section "Culture, Youth and Sport" a consolation prize for the Bourse de Commerce, a magnificent project of a circle within the circle designed by Tadao Ando and revisited by NeM / Niney and Marca Architects and the Agency of Pierre-Antoine Gatier for the Pinault Collection. It is undoubtedly the most ingenious, the most spectacular building, inaugurated this year in Paris. Even if the young and talented duo Nem carried the project, the place remains the work of the famous Japanese architect, sacred among the greatest and already many times awarded. The jury which had previously auditioned the candidates among more than 250 files examined by the journalists of the reviews

Le Moniteur

and

AMC

owed a price to the Stock Exchange but not that of the Silver Square which would have frustrated the youngest, full of promises.

Last year's edition had already gone in this direction, while awarding more famous architects.

Marc Barani and his jury had rewarded the Toulouse School of Economics (contracting authority: Toulouse-1-Capitole University) by the Grafton agency accompanied by the cabinet of Philippe Vigneu and Serge Zilio, located in the Pink City.

With its 300,000 bricks in the city's own color, this six-storey building located in the old listed city center, near St. Peter's Square, was already a feat for its daring integration into the site.
