Seed libraries are places where one can “borrow” single-variety and solid seeds. In the Hindenburgstrasse library, seeds are to be made available to the public free of charge from March 2022. These seeds can be sown at home on the balcony or in the garden. After the harvest, the seeds are stored and dried in order to bring them back to the library - like a book - for the next "lender: in".

A first generous donation has now been received from Bernadette Wimmer, the district consultant for garden culture and land maintenance at the district office. She works in a sun-filled field with great passion and likes to dispose of her excess, solid seeds. Wimmer prefers to grow special types of vegetables, such as B. the Russian kale, a variety of kale or Flower Sprouts, a cross between Brussels sprouts and kale. “These varieties also manage to overwinter outside in our climate and then offer plenty of flowers for insects in the following spring. The seeds can be harvested a few weeks after flowering, ”explains the gardening consultant.

We are looking for solid seeds (not hybrid seeds) of old vegetables or herbs.

Anyone who has leftover seeds can hand them in during the opening hours of the Hindenburgstrasse library - ideally packed in paper bags - there (Hindenburgstrasse 39): Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Friday 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday from 4.30 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.

The private initiative welcomes every donation so that loans for all plant-savvy citizens can begin in March 2022.

The seed library is a further step towards more sustainability and a positive contribution to improving the climate!
