On Friday, December 3, masses in Israel will light the fourth candle of Hanukkah • When is it allowed to light, what is the order of lighting and what are the important emphases for Shabbat? An abbreviated guide

Lots of work ahead of Saturday?

Take a few minutes break with a hot donut and a cup of coffee.

you deserve it.

Today (Friday, Saturday evening in Kislev, December 3) Hanukkah candles meet the Shabbat candles.

Who precedes whom?

On the eve of Shabbat Hanukkah, the Chanukah candles are lit first and only then the Shabbat candles, because after we have lit Shabbat candles, it is no longer allowed to light a fire, not even the fire of Hanukkah candles.

Therefore, on Saturday night everyone lights up before sunset.

In practice, in most places it is customary to have Shabbat about twenty minutes before sunset, which is also the time of lighting the Chanukah candles (and then also the time of lighting the Shabbat candles).

In Jerusalem, where it is customary to have Shabbat forty minutes before sunset, there are those who receive Chanukah Shabbat as usual, and there are those who delay it as in the rest of the country, twenty minutes before sunset.

In any case, in order for the Hanukkah candles to be lit to light up to half an hour after the stars come out, to advertise the miracle, larger candles should be placed in the menorah for the sixth candle, or, if lit with olive oil, to fill the glasses with more oil than on other nights.

Even though it is Shabbat evening, the evening is also blessed with only two blessings and no more when lighting the Chanukah candles: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, the King of the world who we sanctified in His commandments and commanded to light a Chanukah candle, and blessed are you, O Lord our God.

Then the Shabbat candles are lit and blessed: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, the King of the world, whom we have sanctified by His commandments and commanded to light a Shabbat candle.

Shabbat Shalom!

And take it easy, when do you turn it on?
