Sgt. Jan Dark Hyssin, 19, an Arab from Jerusalem, will break another glass ceiling when she completes a fighter training course today (Wednesday) as an exemplary battalion honoree.
At the end of 16 weeks of training fighters at the border, 550 fighters who enlisted in the Border Police under the command of Amir Cohen will be trained today. Among the 550 fighters will also be Sgt.
Hissan, 19, a Christian Arab living in Jerusalem with her father and brother, enlisted against all odds for voluntary security service despite opposition from part of the family.
"I always grew up with Jews. When I turned 16, when all my friends received a first order - I did not receive it" she told Israel Today yesterday, "I went to a recruitment bureau in Jerusalem and applied to enlist in the army. When I was asked 'where do you want to enlist' I answered without hesitation Since I was little, my mother's dream has been to enlist in the border and she has not succeeded.
"About two years ago, my mother died of cancer, and for me it's closing the circle."
