On November 8,

Maria Chiara Carrozza, president of the CNR,

opened the event "Artificial intelligence in post-pandemic Italy", the third edition of the conference organized in Rome by the ANSA IA Observatory, during which experts, entrepreneurs , scientists and representatives of institutions discussed the state of the art and the prospects of AI in Italy and in the world.

Here is the video of the interview (about eleven minutes) and some of the highlights that emerged during the conversation:

1.

Artificial intelligence still requires a lot of fundamental research

: there are already good results and applications in many fields, from medical diagnostics to face recognition, to emulation of cognitive processes, but there is still a lot to do and we are only all 'Start.

2. The PNRR provides funds for fundamental research in this sector and the CNR will do its part in this regard.

However, AI alone is not enough

: we also need to invest in

data science

and

quality data

is needed, so it is necessary to set up adequate infrastructures to collect and analyze them.

3. Will AI save us by solving all our problems (as some hope) or threaten to destroy us (as others fear)?

According to the president of the CNR Maria Chiara Carrozza, it

is still too early to understand this

and take a position on it

.

This also depends on the fact that AI is an attempt to emulate human intelligence, or to reproduce something

we still know very little about

, and the study of which will be one of the frontiers of scientific research in the coming years.

4. The fact remains, however, that

AI is already a powerful tool, and that it can be used for good or for evil

.

Since - explains the president - technology itself is neutral, it is up to us to apply a code of ethics when we decide to use it.

5.

It is still early to talk about humanoid robots

(as did Elon Musk, who even presented one): although it is foreseeable that these will have an important development in the next few years, today the technologies are not yet mature.

The problem is not in the control systems, but rather in the hardware

: there are no batteries that are powerful enough and at the same time light, there are no motors that are efficient enough, and there are also no materials suitable for building a machine that can effectively emulate the human body and its movements.

We still need to study a lot of biomechanics, create new materials and new energy conversion mechanisms.

Also for this reason, the first robots that are coming and will arrive will have very specific applications, such as accompaniment or support in movements.
