12 children among those who perished after a bus coming from northern Macedonia caught fire on a main road • Seven people survived the inferno after jumping from the burning vehicles

Forty-five people, including 12 children, were killed today (Tuesday) morning when a bus making its way from northern Macedonia caught fire near Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria.

Seven people who managed to jump out of the burning vehicles were hospitalized with varying degrees of injury in hospitals in the Bulgarian capital and it is reported that the condition of the injured is stable.

Bulgarian Interior Minister Boyko Rashkov expressed shock at the accident, the deadliest in his country's history, saying: "The bodies were found inside the bus when they were grouped together and completely burned. These are horrific and horrific sights. I have never seen anything like it."

The cause of the accident is unknown but the bus collided with a checkpoint on the highway apparently a few minutes after it started to catch fire.

The accident occurred on a highway about 45 kilometers from the capital Sofia.

The bus left Istanbul and was apparently used by holiday families from Bulgaria.

Pictures from the country's media showed the bus completely scorched in the middle of the road.

"A terrible tragedy occurred today," interim Bulgarian Prime Minister Stefan Yanev said in a special statement after the accident.

Northern Macedonia's Prime Minister Zoran Ze'ev said he spoke to one of the survivors who told him the passengers were asleep and awoke to a loud explosion.

"This is a horrific case. It is a terrible tragedy that is difficult to digest," he said in an interview with a local news channel.

The head of the Investigations Division of the Bulgarian Police, Borislav Saprov, said that four buses from the Northern Macedonia Travel Agency entered Bulgaria on Monday after a stay in Turkey.

"The human error of the steer or an unexplained technical malfunction are the two factors we are currently looking at," Saprov said.
