The commissioner of the Israeli embassy in Poland, Tal Ben-Ari, who was returned to Jerusalem for consultations four months ago following the approval of the law restricting claims on World War II property, will return to Warsaw in the coming days, Foreign Ministry officials said.

The decision to bring Ben-Ari back to Warsaw was made after a series of messages came from the Polish government in recent weeks about a desire to try and end the crisis.

A senior Foreign Ministry official said the Poles had taken a series of measures aimed at signaling to Israel their desire to end the crisis such as positive statements at an anti-Semitic conference held in Malmo, Sweden a few weeks ago, a ten-day sharp condemnation of the Kalisz anti-Semitic march in Jerusalem this week.

Foreign Ministry officials said the Poles also conveyed messages about their desire for Israeli Ambassador Yaakov Livneh to begin work in Warsaw, as well as their desire to send a new ambassador to Tel Aviv.

However, at this stage Israel does not agree to such a move that will end the crisis.

The Israeli condition for the return of ambassadors and an end to the crisis is the passage of a resolution in the Polish parliament that adopts the international principles for the fight against anti-Semitism of the International Task Force on Holocaust Remembrance (IHRA).

The Poles have recently expressed support for these principles, but have not bindingly adopted them in the government or parliament.

In August, the President of Poland signed a law that eliminates the possibility for Jews to receive compensation for property stolen from them during the Holocaust.

The law was approved despite protests and warnings from the United States and Israel.

Following the approval of the law, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid announced the return of the Commissioner of the Israeli Embassy in Warsaw for consultations in Jerusalem.

At the same time, Israel made it clear to Poland that it did not want the Polish ambassador to return to Israel from his vacation.

In doing so, Israel has in fact lowered the level of relations between the two countries.
