There is still less than a month before the Legislative Council election, and candidates from all walks of life continue to canvass for votes. Among them, the DAB Legislative Council Member Zhou Hao Ting ran for direct elections in the Northwest New Territories for re-election.

In an exclusive interview with "Hong Kong 01", he said that in the past, the parliamentary political struggle had become a "zero-sum game of life and death." He hoped that after the election system was improved, the Legislative Council could properly perform its function of monitoring the government.

Looking back on the turmoil of the amendment, Zhou Haoding admitted frankly that this was the most memorable event in his political career.

As the first member to promote the amendment of the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance, Zhou Hao Ting reiterated that the original intention of the amendment was not wrong. What he owed was the government's interpretive ability, showing that he had tried his best to assist Mrs. Poon and he would not regret it if he had a clear conscience.

Means that there will be more room for the establishment of a supervisory government under the new system

Zhou Haoding joined the Legislative Council in 2016 following the category of "Super District Councils". In just a few years of his parliamentary career, he has experienced ups and downs.

He said that the new electoral system has ushered in a new era, and there is no need to be entangled in political struggles and internal friction, and there is a little "sigh of relief."

He criticized that in the past, the "speculators" in the Legislative Council were politicized when they encountered controversy, distorting the "monitoring government" into "demonizing" and "dragging down" the government. In fact, they did not have an assistant to administer the government and killed Hong Kong. "The real role of the Legislative Council is to find a consensus if it encounters a contradiction, resolve it, and come up with ways to improve the problem. It should be inclusive, but the political culture in the past has too many struggles and confrontations. Provoking political contradictions first, this kind of "life and death, zero-sum game" type of opposition cannot really effectively solve the problem."

He believes that under the new political situation there will be more room for the establishment to monitor the government, because in the past when political antagonisms were obvious, the establishment must have unanimous gunpoints. There are too many opinions, "It is difficult to say a few more words. If we also participate, the parliament does not need to operate."

He pointed out that in the future, everyone can focus on the content of the bill and talk about serious matters.

Pay attention to traffic in New Territories North and advocate the reopening of Central Tuen Mun Ferry

The seats in the "Super District Council" were abolished, and Chow Ho Ting succeeded his party mate Leung Chi Cheung in the Northwest New Territories constituency covering Tuen Mun and Yuen Long.

Zhou Haoding said that in addition to his three main political platforms: customs clearance, re-industrialization, and national education in primary and secondary schools, he will particularly focus on the transportation problems in the northern part of the country. This is something that residents often hear when they are in the area recently.

"Be aware that the population will increase in the future and there will be more and more people living in the New Territories. How can the transportation facilities be solved? Route 1 will have to wait until at least 2034. It’s so long, it’s really unacceptable.”

He pointed out that at least the government should give some short-term plans, such as studying the reopening of the ferry route from Tuen Mun Ferry Terminal out of Central. In the long run, it will compress the preliminary procedures of infrastructure planning, which is anxious for the public. In the long run, Industry 4.0 is also an issue. It can provide Hong Kong with a new economic engine, drive the employment of the residents in the northern New Territories, and ease the daily traffic demand. Therefore, the two are closely related.

Pan Ma criticized Zhou Haoding with "spoken words": she has a clear conscience

In the 2019 legislative turmoil, Zhou Haoding and the chairman of the DAB Li Huiqiong were the first parliamentarians to assist the mother of Pan Xiaoying, the deceased in Taiwan's homicide.

The government later proposed to amend the "Fleeing Offenders Ordinance," but failed to deal with the political disputes behind it, and a mess was finally brewing.

In the current case, the suspect, Chen Tongjia, has not yet surrendered to Taiwan, and Pan’s mother has earlier publicly criticized Zhou Haoding and Li Huiqiong for coaxing her into "spoken words" that day.

Zhou Haoding said that there have been more than one response in the past. From the DAB to the government, the original intention to promote the amendment of the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance was very clear. It was to solve the Taiwan homicide case and the legal loopholes behind it, but was eventually launched by the "speculators" The government’s public opinion machine discredited the government, and the official narrative capacity was completely unmatched. In the later stage, the government withdrew the amendments and the demonstrations continued. Obviously, it has nothing to do with the amendments. It is a "color revolution" against China’s chaos in Hong Kong: "If To say that there are any shortcomings between us and the government, it is at best that we have not done enough in explanation and failed to confront them (the opposition), so that they can incite so many people to demonstrate."

He also mentioned that Chen Tongjia had expressed his intention to surrender, but due to Taiwan's insistence on political manipulation, Chen could not go to Taiwan.

"For the whole matter, I have done my best to help her (Mama Pan). I have a clear conscience and will not regret it. I hope everyone understands that it is because of Taiwan's political operation that Chen Tongjia deliberately prevented Chen Tongjia from surrendering, and it was tied to Taiwan. "

Pledge to assist voters regardless of political opinions

In any case, the dispute over the revision of the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance that caused the biggest chaos since the reunification at that time has become an established fact.

Zhou Haoding recalled that period of time and felt that the environment was difficult at the time. The establishments all worked together to get past and try their best to help the family members of the policemen who were threatened. This experience was quite unforgettable: "At that time, my parliamentary office was "exploded". Second, a street station was attacked by volunteers, and some taxis were even driving a suspected attempt to hit them. Fortunately, they didn’t.” He recalled that Hong Kong at that time was in an "anarchy" and the establishment was threatened with personal threats against them and their families every day. There is no day and no end to the beginning, and the harm and threat to the whole camp are great. Fortunately, they succeeded in the end, which was not easy.

The political situation in Hong Kong has stabilized, but the social tears have not been repaired. The government's various "disorder chaos" work continues. Some people in Hong Kong may feel that political freedom has been narrowed, and they may ignore politics and even immigration.

Zhou Haoding believes that it takes time to heal his injuries slowly, and he can't be anxious: "Every adult, when he has a set of his own ideas, it is difficult for others to change. This is personal freedom. From our standpoint, of course, he thinks that there are some Organizing the anti-China and chaotic Hong Kong needs to be banned in accordance with the law, and the roots need to be banned. Some people maintain their inherent views, which are not so easy to change. They can only hope that with the passage of time, they will see that there is a stable situation in Hong Kong. Change it."

He stated that even if they are not necessarily voters who support the DAB, they will provide assistance as much as possible, especially to assist Hong Kong’s economic transformation and re-industrialization, provide high-quality employment opportunities for young people, and see the hope of upward mobility: "Even if he may not Supporting us, it is difficult to change the inherent ideas, I will do some work to help him, and I will follow up their demands."
