Joinville: sidewalk collapses during Christmas parade in Brazil

Some 33 people were injured when a sidewalk collapsed during the Christmas festivities in Joinville, Brazil.

Some 33 people were injured on Monday when a sidewalk on Avenida Beira Rio collapsed, throwing people into the Cachoeria River, during the inaugural presentation of the Christmas festivities, the Joinville city council reported in a statement, in the north of Santa Catarina, Brazil.

The ceremony had to be interrupted for 40 minutes because of what happened.

The city council added that, in total, 21 adults and 12 children were referred to the São José Municipal Hospital and the Dr. Jeser Amarante Faria Children's Hospital.

No patient had serious injuries and the condition of all was considered stable.

Immediately after the resumption of the event, the Mayor of Joinville, Adriano Silva, began his speech thanking the professionals who worked to rescue the people who fell into the river.

“We are grateful for not having anyone in serious condition.

And also for the emergency care provided to all the victims, ”said the mayor.

Structural inspection in Joinville

A team from the Department of Urban Infrastructure and Civil Defense continues the inspection of the site's structure.

Mayor Silva called a meeting for early Tuesday morning with managers from various departments to determine next actions after the sidewalk collapsed.
