The Child Death Case Review Committee today (23rd) released its fifth report, analyzing a total of 259 child deaths from 2016 to 2018. Except for 158 natural deaths, many of the other unnatural deaths involved parents' negligent care.
The committee gave an example of a 4-month-old baby who vomited milk and wrapped a black garbage bag on a pillow. The baby suffocated to death while sleeping. There were also girls who were strangled to death by ropes while trying to practice in the bedroom after watching a YouTube rope escape video.
The Committee urges parents and the public to report videos that are potentially dangerous to children. Some parents should guide their children to watch.

4-month-old baby vomits milk at night, parents trash bags and pillows into suffocation trap
In the past three years, there were 9 child death cases involving suffocation. Committee member Li Zehe said that one of them involved a 4-month-old baby who was vomiting milk at night. The parents put a black garbage bag on the pillow of the baby. Asphyxiated and died.
Li suggested that parents should let their babies sleep on their backs, and don't put pillows and other objects that can easily choke the baby beside the bed, and set up separate cribs.
Girl strangled to death after watching rope escape video on bed railing lanyard practice
The convener of the accidental death case team, Deng Zhihao, also pointed out that a girl who saw a video about rope escape on YouTube was strangled to death while trying to practice rope escape while hanging a rope on the railing of the bed in the bedroom.
Deng suggested that the public report videos that are dangerous to children to YouTube and watch them only under the guidance of parents.

7 cases of child abuse resulting in death, 5 cases involving parent abuse committee: no one has the right to take a person’s life
In the past three years, there have been 7 deaths due to child abuse, 5 were abused by their parents, and the other two were abused by neighbours with mental illness and foreign domestic helpers.
Committee member Shi Meilun emphasized that "no one person has the right to take the life of any one person", referring to a case involving a drug-abusing mother living in a subdivided room who killed her daughter due to mental disorder. After the family committed suicide, the mother chose to commit suicide with her children again, believing that the society could strengthen grief counseling.
Welcome to the establishment of the crime of no protection, but the problem of child abuse is solved without legislation
Recently, the court sentenced the male and female prisoners to 5 years and 4 months for the torture of a 22-month-old baby girl. The committee stated that it would not comment on individual cases and welcome the "no protection crime" recommended by the Law Reform Commission. However, the problem cannot be solved without legislation, and the public and relevant stakeholders still need to raise their awareness to prevent child abuse.
10% of natural deaths involve ethnic minorities or are related to no prenatal check-ups
Even if deaths were not accidental, of the 159 natural deaths, the analysis found that 16 of them were related to ethnic minorities. Committee member Li Zehe pointed out that ethnic minority mothers did not undergo prenatal check-ups or did not follow medical care recommendations after delivery. Provide more female interpreters in hospitals or maternal and child health care centers, and provide information in the mother tongue of ethnic minorities.
The number of suicide deaths among 59 children in 3 years has more than doubled.
