Opinion | City of Eternal Controversy Israel today

2021-11-23T21:17:31.176Z

It is time for Jerusalem, which is equally sacred to the three religions, to be above all controversy or conflict, regardless of the question of control or municipal affiliation.

The murderous and heinous attack this week in Jerusalem reminds the leaders of Israel, the Palestinians and us as human beings living in this part of the country, that there is a painful and difficult issue to act to resolve, or at least achieve peace and quiet for the vast majority of people living in East Jerusalem.

The blood pictures on the floor leave no room for compassion for anyone who decides to become an educator, a clergyman, a murderer, and there is no room to think otherwise, because murder is murder - regardless of political opinion, consent, struggle, or even occupation.

However, any tragic event of this kind is a reminder that there is an issue, that as long as it does not come to an end - people may still think that this is the right way to deter others from coming or living in this place.

In the square kilometers between the city walls, is the highest number of police and security forces in the world.

Everyone who walks around the city feels uncomfortable.

One can recognize the lack of trust and apprehension and mutual fear on the faces of Jews and Arabs alike.

Everyone wants the city, but is not willing to join hands for it.

The geopolitical situation of Jerusalem is only getting more complicated.

For five decades, the State of Israel has been claiming that Jerusalem is its united capital, and in fact this is not true, or rather is not true.

On the other hand, the Palestinian leadership claims at all times and in all places that East Jerusalem is the capital of the Palestinian state, but not only is this not true in practice, but it has no grip on the city as an entity.

The Palestinians living in East Jerusalem are not Israelis, and are waging a very stubborn struggle, so far without much success, to obtain Israeli residency and citizenship.

In the last two decades, Israel has tightened the conditions for obtaining residency or citizenship, and has even worked to deny quite a few blue identity cards from Palestinian individuals and families.

At the same time, the Palestinian Authority, which as stated has no grip on the ground, has no authority to decide in place of the Palestinian residents of the city.

It turns out that the latter are not Israelis and are not wanted in Israel, and can not obtain citizenship or an identity card from the Palestinian Authority (whoever issues her identity cards - this is the State of Israel at all).

Jerusalem needs to emerge from the struggle, especially the armed struggle, and should become a place where people - regardless of religion or nationality - will feel physically and mentally secure.

Millions of believers come to pray and complete the commandments that God has commanded them, in the three religions.

But everyone - Jews, Muslims and Christians - walk around the old city walls in fear, and even in fear.

It is time for Jerusalem, which is equally sacred to the three religions, to be above all controversy or conflict, regardless of the question of control or municipal affiliation, in order to set an example of living together, tolerance, acceptance of the other and his love.
