Russia's First Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dmitry Polyansky, reaffirmed the intensification of collective international efforts to combat terrorism in Syria and Iraq, noting that the Information Center in Baghdad is doing an important work in combating terrorism in the region.
At a meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in Iraq, Polyansky said today, “This challenge can only be effectively addressed through the broadest possible coordination of counter-terrorism efforts,” noting the activities of the four-way information center operating in Baghdad with the participation of the Russian army, Iraq, Iran and Syria.
Polyansky also expressed the inadmissibility of any illegal military presence in Iraq and said, “We assume that the presence of foreign military units in the country can only be with the approval of local authorities or based on an appropriate resolution of the UN Security Council,” calling on “all external parties interested in achieving stability.” in Iraq to refrain from unilateral destructive steps that negatively affect the situation in the country and abroad.”
He explained that Russia expects the countries of the region to realize the current diplomatic capabilities "to collectively promote peace and stability in the entire Middle East, including within the framework of the updated Russian concept of security in the Gulf."
