Spontaneous cancellation, alcohol ban? Mindelheim's replacement Christmas market put to the test

Mindelheim - Three days before the first pre-Christmas offers start, Mindelheim's city council has subjected the replacement Christmas market - several stalls distributed in the old town - to another check.

The occasion was a request to speak from Green City Councilor Josef Doll, who questioned the mulled wine stalls in view of the high corona numbers.

At the end of the public meeting on Monday, Mayor Dr. Stephan Winter informed that the city council meeting on December 13th will be the last for this year due to the Corona situation - and that the traditional annual closing meeting with invited guests of honor will fall victim to Corona this year. The New Year's reception in January has already been shelved.

"And something else does not fit into this time," said Josef Doll and asked for the Christmas market in Mindelheim to be canceled. The city had already decided in early summer to cancel the Christmas market in its traditional form - among other things because the Fieranten had demanded early planning security from the cultural office, as head of the department Christian Schedler had explained to the youth, culture and social committee a good month ago. That is why the city is using last year's program this year and offering locals and guests a substitute Christmas market that is as safe as possible with a good handful of stalls spread across the old town. In this way, crowds of people standing together over one or more cups of mulled wine should be avoided.

It is precisely because of such a scenario that Green City Councilor Doll is concerned, as he made clear: While the nursing staff in the clinics are working at their limit, alcohol cannot flow in Mindelheim and the party can be lively, according to Doll.

Because 2G protection does not apply in front of the outdoor sales booths.

He had already expressed his concern to the district office, but, according to Dolls, no one felt responsible there.

"So it is up to the city of Mindelheim to take it in hand."

Mayor Winter wants to refrain from this.

Because even with a nationwide Christmas market ban in Bavaria, which the state parliament is likely to pass on Tuesday, according to Markus Söder's statements, the stalls in Mindelheim (according to the law) would not have to close.

After all, these are free bar areas for restaurateurs.

Should the Unterallgäu district exceed the incidence of 1,000 - and that should happen shortly in view of the development of the corona numbers - the stalls would have to cease operations anyway. The only remaining offer would then be the fairytale forest in the inner courtyard of the Maria Ward Institute. According to Winter, this pre-Christmas highlight can ultimately be equated with the shop window of a retailer. "I would like to give families with children the opportunity to do so," says Winter.

Mehmet Yesil (SPD) warned against closing the stalls for mulled wine and sausages without the legal basis from the Bavarian Ministry of Health - otherwise one would have to start questioning the operation of, for example, kebab stalls or chicken carts. Manfred Salger (CSU) also campaigned for the stalls no longer to be canceled at short notice, because the restaurateurs had already bought and prepared. Christoph Walter (CSU) also warned against a “quick shot” without a legal basis. Ursula Kiefersauer (MBG) interjected that one could possibly ensure more security with an alcohol-free offer - also to avoid crowds of people.

Mayor Winter said that if the corona figures allow catering, it would be left with the current plans, but also announced increased controls around the stalls.

In the event of violations, they will intervene and "if they are too unreasonable" stop the offer.
