Two women from Freising launched an online gallery for handicrafts during the pandemic.

A market and forum for the finer things in life.

Freising

- Anyone who hears the name Asam - especially in Freising - thinks of art.

To the Mariendom, to the Asamtheater.

For a few weeks now, the name Asam has also been associated with contemporary art: “Studio Asam” is the name of an online gallery and online shop.

It was founded by Isolde Bazlen and Katharina Eser, both from Freising.

It's an idea that was born out of the Corona emergency, as Katharina Eser tells the Freisinger Tagblatt: Galleries are closed, there were no craft markets, exhibitions canceled.

What to do?

Bazlen and Eser came up with the idea of displaying and selling high quality handicrafts online.

Sometimes the artists were approached themselves, sometimes they contacted the duo.

And so a virtual gallery was created.

(By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

What all objects have in common is that they are products of handicrafts.

Or to put it another way: “Things that you can put in your home,” explains Eser.

Things that are part of table culture in the broadest sense.

They are sometimes made of metal, sometimes made of ceramic, but also made of wood and paper: bowls, candlesticks, baskets.

"In our gallery we present beautiful objects that enrich everyday life - and are functional at the same time," says Eser.

“We think that good handicrafts democratize art.

For us it belongs to the same discipline.

We can take handcrafted objects home with us.

We can look at them, touch them, use them and observe how they affect us and our everyday life, ”is the credo of the two makers.

Studio Asam should not only exist virtually

Because, as it can be read on the homepage: “The work of artisans in the cultural and creative industries penetrates deeply into our everyday lives. The objects that are created by them offer a visual, haptic and practical experience. The arts and crafts are based on techniques that are sometimes thousands of years old and that are still in use today, while at the same time making the leap to innovation. Almost all artists and artisans are academy graduates, their everyday objects want to be aesthetically convincing as well as fulfill their function.

Bazlen and Eser are already thinking ahead: On the one hand, they want to include even more artisans in their online gallery, and on the other hand, there will probably be a blog from 2022.

And when you think of pop-up stores, Studio Asam will also be represented at handicraft markets itself.

Founders with a lot of art expertise

The founder Isolde Bazlen has been working with artisans for 30 years.

She designed the exhibition design for the Danner Prizes and also the presentation of the “Talents” objects at the international craft fair in Munich.

Katharina Eser studied art history in Munich.

She worked for years in the Goetz Collection in Munich, where she set up art education, among other things.
