Strasbourg-Sana

The European Court of Human Rights condemned the Turkish regime's arbitrary detention of 427 judges and prosecutors, five years after the attempted coup, which this regime used as a pretext to launch a campaign of arrests and dismissal against opponents of its policies.

Agence France-Presse reported that the seven European judges assigned to rule in this file agreed that the Turkish regime had violated the right to freedom of judges and prosecutors guaranteed by the European Convention on Human Rights, indicating that “the decision to temporarily detain these judges was not taken in accordance with a procedure established by law, and this was not required.” exclusively as required by the situation.

The court noted that the Turkish regime’s mentioned actions “related to violations of the independence of judges,” pointing out that it had imposed a fine of five thousand euros to each of the judges and public prosecutors as moral compensation.

These judges and public prosecutors, who were practicing their profession at several levels, including the Court of Cassation and the Supreme Administrative Court, were arrested and imprisoned “on suspicion of belonging” to the organization of the Turkish preacher Fethullah Gulen, whom the Turkish regime accuses of plotting the coup attempt.

Since the attempted coup in 2016, the regime of Recep Tayyip Erdogan has waged a severe repressive campaign targeting its opponents, as tens of thousands of people have been arrested and dismissed in various civil, military and judicial institutions in the country.
