In May of this year, a mysterious tunnel was discovered in the student dormitory site of the University of Science and Technology.

Half a year later, HKUST sent an email to the teachers and students of the school today (23), stating that the current excavation and site formation works have been almost completed and are entering the stage of building the superstructure; the school also stated that after detailed research, it decided to use digital methods. , Create a 3D printing model to record the tunnel, and also physically extract a part of the tunnel for preservation. The extraction is expected to start at the end of this month.

Only a part of it will be selected for display in the school in the future

The signature was sent by the Vice President (Administration) Pang Dingquan of the University of Science and Technology and the Campus Development Office in an email that stated that during the construction of the site in May this year, three underground tunnel entrances were discovered and construction was suspended.

The school stated that it has been liaising with the Antiquities Office and conducting different studies. It has been found that the entrances of the three tunnels are about 3 meters to 8 meters long. If they are not dealt with, there is a risk of collapse.

The school pointed out that in addition to safety, it also respects the public interest. Therefore, it worked closely with the civil engineering department of the university and a professional company to explore different feasible methods for tunnel conservation. After carefully studying the different options, the school decided to only remove part of the tunnel for conservation. And will use 3D printing technology to record the tunnel.

The University of Science and Technology continued that due to the unstable structure of the tunnel and the possibility of collapsing again, it has already begun preparations for the extraction of the tunnel and it is expected to start at the end of this month. Students from the Department of Civil Engineering and Computer Science in the school are invited to participate. The tunnel is scanned and digitized under the supervision of the faculty.

The school mentioned in the email that the extracted tunnel part will be moved to a suitable location on the campus and will be displayed in the future.

In May of this year, the police received a report from the person in charge of the HKUST construction site, stating that the workers found an unknown tunnel while working on the site. After receiving the report, the Office of Historic Sites immediately sent staff to inspect the site, record and inquire about the passage of the tunnel.

At that time, some scholars estimated that the tunnel had a chance to be built during the last one to two years of the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong during World War II to allow the Japanese army to hide and ambush the Allied forces.

"Hong Kong 01" is making inquiries with the Antiquities Office about the incident.
