Damascus-SANA

The Director of Communicable and Chronic Diseases at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Zuhair Al-Sahwi, warned against using antibiotics to prevent or treat the Corona virus, explaining that antibiotics have no effect on viruses and are only prescribed in the event of complications such as pneumonia.

In a statement to SANA, Dr. Al-Sahwi stressed the need to strictly adhere to the medical instructions regarding the type of antibiotic and the correct dose, and not to share their medications with others.

Dr. Al-Sahwi indicated that the indiscriminate use of antibiotics leads to a prolonged hospitalization period and an increase in the severity of illness and death in some cases, in addition to the emergence of drug-resistant germs and microbes in the body, which is one of the biggest challenges of modern medicine.

Countries around the world celebrate the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week between the 18th and the 24th of November to remind that the misuse of these antimicrobials and their excessive intake is a main driver for the emergence of drug-resistant pathogens, which the World Health Organization classifies as one of the ten major global threats to public health facing humanity.

Antimicrobials include antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, and antiparasitics, which are medicines used to prevent and treat infections that affect humans, animals, and plants.
