Researchers all over the world are working on understanding the coronavirus better and better.

The latest findings now confirm the effectiveness of the corona protective measures.

Melbourne, Australia - Hand washing, keeping your distance, wearing a mask: these simple rules can successfully keep the number of cases in check.

That was the result of a study by Monash University in Australia, which was published on Thursday in the prestigious British Medical Journal (BMJ).

Further relevant studies came from the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover on detection dogs that recognize corona viruses and from the US health authority CDC on the risk of stillbirths in the event of a corona infection.

Wearing a mask reduces the incidence by 53 percent

Vaccinations save lives and, according to experts, are the way out of the pandemic. However, since vaccinations do not offer 100 percent protection, there are additional corona measures such as keeping your distance or wearing a mask. A current meta-analysis shows how effective these means are. The work of the research team led by Stella Talic from Monash University in Melbourne examined 72 studies, eight of which were ultimately included in the analysis. The scientists came to the conclusion that hand washing, keeping your distance and wearing a mask are effective means of containing the development of the pandemic.

Wearing the mask is considered particularly effective: it was able to reduce the incidence by 53 percent, keeping your distance reduced the number of cases by a quarter (25 percent).

The results of the partial analysis were not statistically significant due to the small number of studies on hand washing.

But the bottom line is that the study shows very clearly: masks work.

The example of Great Britain currently shows what happens if a country waives corona measures.

Sniffer dogs can differentiate Sars-Cov-2 from 15 other pathogens

Medical sniffer dogs can differentiate the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus from 15 other viral respiratory pathogens with a high degree of accuracy.

This was the result of a study by the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover (TiHo), which was published on Thursday in the scientific journal Frontiers in Medicine.

For the study, the researchers trained twelve sniffer dogs with inactivated saliva samples from corona patients.

The samples contained viral pathogens such as Sars-CoV-2, flu viruses, the rhinovirus and other coronaviruses.

For the control group, the scientists used saliva from healthy volunteers and non-infected cell cultures.

Pregnant women who become infected with corona have a higher risk of stillbirth

The US health authority CDC published a study on Friday that examined the connection between corona infection in pregnant women and the risk of stillbirth. As a result, the risk of stillbirth before the contagious Delta variant occurred in infected people was 1.47 times higher than in uninfected pregnant women. After the beginning of the delta corona wave, the risk of stillbirth was even increased 1.9 times, as the authority announced on Friday.

The researchers examined 1.2 million hospital admissions between March 2020 and September 2021.

The number of stillbirths was 8,154, with the scientists calculating other risk factors statistically.

From the researchers' point of view, further studies are necessary to shed light on the connection.

The risk of infection with corona can be significantly reduced through complete vaccination protection.

The German Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) also recommends the Corona vaccination for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

The same applies to the flu vaccination (
