The corona numbers continue to rise, in Saxony there is talk of an impending triage.

There are dissenting voices.

But they don't sound entirely convinced.

Dresden - In Saxony there have been more than 10,000 corona deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

With a value of 935.8, the state has the highest incidence in Germany four weeks before Christmas Eve.

The proportion of residents who have been vaccinated twice is a low 57.8 percent.

Now the word "triage" is in the room, the preference for certain patients.

“Unvaccinated people are also treated, no question about it.

But when it comes to weighing things up, the chances are worse, ”warned Erik Bodendieck again.

He is President of the State Medical Association of Saxony.

If nothing changes in the number of infections, the clinics in Saxony could be overloaded by the end of this week, he told the dpa.

Doctors have already been looking for two hours here to find a place for stroke or heart attack patients.

Possible triage: "When two patients compete for a ventilation place"

Triage means that medical professionals must decide who to help first due to scarce resources.

Bodendieck emphasized that every patient would of course be treated, even if the clinic was overloaded.

But he restricted: “The only question is what is possible.

If two patients who need to be ventilated compete for a ventilator place, then a decision has to be made as to which patient has the better chance of treatment.

The treatment place would be assigned to him. ”It will be decided and weighed up on a case-by-case basis.

Medical Association of Saxony on the Corona situation: "Everyone pulls your belt"

In order to avoid such a situation, a significant reduction in contact is now required.

“I am an optimist and I say: Now everyone pulls your belt.” Everyone should keep their distance from others and wear FFP2 masks.

Vaccinated people should also test themselves daily.

But there is a contradiction to Bodendieck's assessment.

According to hospital coordinator Michael Albrecht, Saxony is still a long way from triage.

A prognosis from November 22nd predicts that there will be 669 intensive care patients in the Free State on December 6th, said Albrecht.

"We are currently at just under 350, which means almost doubling the current number of intensive care patients in 14 days."

Record incidence in Saxony: Doctors are preparing for triage

If the new corona rules do not work, you actually have to consider how the patients can be optimally cared for.

Albrecht said at the same time that no hospital had to come into the situation to triage.

Instead, patients should be relocated.

Nevertheless, one has already spoken to Bodendieck about the subject of triage in principle.

It makes sense not to first consider how to deal with it in an absolutely escalated situation.

“That is why you should have a quiet discussion and put together a committee of experts to develop sets of rules within this framework and then give them to the doctors.” He thinks something like this makes sense in principle, “but not because we need it this week . "
