The Marienplatz in Schongau is now adorned with a silver fir and creates a Christmas spirit in the city.

The tree has a special story this year.

Schongau - Exactly four weeks before Christmas, the Christmas tree was set up on Schongau's Marienplatz.

Due to the corona situation, some things will be different this year: No Christmas market, no stalls, no wind instruments, no magic mulled wine.

Nevertheless, the old town should shine atmospherically with Christmas fairy lights.

Including the Christmas tree, of course, which, like every year, will be an eye-catcher at its regular place.

Christine and Frank stroll through the old town on Wednesday holding hands.

The newly in love couple stops at Marienplatz to admire the Christmas tree that has just been set up.

Their joint verdict: "Wonderfully densely grown, a jewel on a tree."

This is where the Schongau Christmas tree comes from

This tree has a special history: 29 years ago, Markus Schwarz planted this silver fir himself in front of his parents' house in Altenstadter Straße as a 13-year-old boy, and he was always very proud.

But meanwhile the tree has become too big for the small front yard, so that Schwarz made it available to the city for this Christmas party.

And went one better.

Schwarz, who works at the city nursery, felled his tree himself. The “Holzer” team is perfectly coordinated.

While Bernd Pietruschka is attaching the tether to the branches, Konrad Gruber is tensioning the crane.

Cutting through the trunk is routine for Markus Schwarz, although this time there is a bit of sadness.

Loading on the carriage, transport through the old town, insertion into the anchorage in the ground.

Everything happens in a flash.

Even wedging is quick and easy.

The jewel in silver fir looks like a picture book.

It's all over in an hour.

One last comment from the direction of the anchoring shaft by Bernd Pietruschka, who even knows the Latin name of the silver fir: “Abies Alba”, he calls out from below.

The fairy lights can come.
